Thread: Drill Chuck Falling Off
21/11/2018 21:03:07

I have a drill chuck for my mill, it is a taper connection to the MT3 arbour. The problem is it has started falling off the arbour. It appears to be a good fit. I have tried fixing it on with Loctite 648 which held nicely for a few uses then dropped off again. Has anyone any suggestions apart from launching it over the field behind my workshop?angry JC

My 1908 Drummond suffers from crosslide backlash but I wind the tool in to where I want it and then lock the crosslide whilst I traverse the cut. This system works well for me. A down side is that it is difficult to use the dial on the handles so I fitted a cheap home programmed DRO ( approx £25.00) just on the crosslide. JC

Thread: 1950/60 car electronic rev counter
20/11/2018 19:33:33

A lot of land rover diesels had rev counters run from the alternator. Most of the alternators had an extra connection for tachometer display. As for the rev counter in question John has got it how we used to connect them to our "Hotrods".

I went to Autojumble at Newark (UK) yesterday. At one stall there was a Rolls Royce Merlin engine on a stand. It was run up several times during the day but only for short runs due to not having a prop fitted. I wonder how many people asked the owner what he wanted for it...smile p

Thread: What did you do Today 2018
17/11/2018 19:53:44

I spent most of the day sorting and loading lots of tools and parts into Brother in Laws van ready for local autojumble tomorrow. Due to health problems parts and tools now of no use to me but any money raised can be used for tools and parts for Models??? Only problem with going to autojumbles is the last one I went to a Myford/Drummond M followed me home. wink I am under strict instructions by SWMBO not to buy anything whilst there...... Honestly I am just storing it for Ian angel 2

Many Thanks Chuck

Downloaded,

I just love these old books, how the authors managed without expensive machine tools that we now think a necessity. Also some of the ingredients to make everyday items. One model engineering book I read had a recipe for a varnish for steam engine display stand, main ingredient was Dragon's Blood. Am having trouble locating a supplier on fleabay.surprise

Steve,

Thank you for your reply and invitation. I would like to have nipped over at the weekend for a chat but have prior family commitments. I will see you in the new year. Could I suggest that if any members have pictures of the club display at Warwick that you put them on the facebook page. It was a good display and does show a bit more of the diversity of the club. Could you get the contact details on the website updated as the email address appears to be invalid. Also inform model engineering of meetings etc to include in their club events page. Hopefully a couple of ideas to help raise the club profile and improve access for new members. JC

I have just looked at your facebook page and everything on it is loco based. I spoke to your chairman at Warwick show and explained that not all model engineers have the skills/financial resources/wish to build locos or traction engines. You had some superb non loco/traction models on display at Warwick would it be possible as a club/society to promote other aspects of model engineering. I am very local to MMDES and would be very interested in joining if it didn't appear so narrow in content. I guess that my comments will stir up a few people but as a beginner to this hobby it would be really good to be able to sit and have a chat, cup of tea with like minded people every now and then.

Thread: Evenings all
10/11/2018 21:21:06

Hello John, as Kevin suggested try making some tooling for the machines first then try something like a simple oscillator/wobbler engine. It really adds to your confidence when you have a simple running motor that you can say "I built that". Another John

What a superb model and engineering. Many thanks for sharing this build with us. John

Thread: Learning CAD with Alibre Atom3D
28/10/2018 22:08:46

I have tried to use several different CAD systems in the past but my limited braincells have failed to understand them. When I saw that MEW had got a good deal on a top class CAD system and was going to do a series on it aimed as us with limited knowledge,,, plus a dedicated thread on forum, I thought that's for me. I had to buy a new computer to run this software, got it loaded and tried it. So far so good. Had a look at the thread on forum and thought "am I in the right place?" I presumed (obviously incorrectly) that this thread was to help us struggling beginners---- NO it just has stuff on it that we have no idea what is being discussed!!! I have re read the tutorial so far and still cannot follow what is being said on here. John

Thread: Pumping water up a hill
24/10/2018 20:50:18

Our village relied on a Ram Pump system for nearly 60 years but not sure of the lift or volume. They are shown in a map dated 1950ish. Very low maintenance apparently according to the then Clerk of works at local opencast mining company who installed it.

Thread: What did you do Today 2018
24/10/2018 20:25:55

I spent a lot of the day getting ME mags in order and sorted ready to scan all of the episodes on building the ME Vertical boiler so that I can combine them into one PDF file. I can then just print out the pages to take into the workshop as I need them and not get the original mags. messed up. The reason it took so long? reading articles that I had forgotten along the way.. Anno Domini.

Thread: Traction Engine (Electric)
24/10/2018 20:02:46

Not mad at all or so are a lot of ussarcastic.. On my electric traction engine the battery was in the ride on trailer pulled behind. That way you can use a bigger battery, car? A small battery under the coal powered a sound system. No not a boombox...smile o

Thread: cutting the bar of a digital calliper
24/10/2018 19:56:07

I have used "cheap" digital vernier calipers for DRO on my lathe and mill. Please be aware that on most of them when you switch them off it only turns the screen off, the unit keeps running and of course flattens your battery. All of these calipers that I have seen are----- 1.5V------- DC. I have also built a power supply for my DRO with a 12v output for LED lighting, 1.5V for caliper/scales and 5.0v to power the DRO brain (arduino pro mini).

Thread: Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition
21/10/2018 22:41:10

I went on Friday, many thanks Brian, Andrew, Kraig, and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Spent more than I would admit to SWMBO but had a great day. Just a few replies to some previous postings. if we don't support these shows they will close down,

It's the same old exhibits.... Did you exhibit anything? I realize that a lot of people can't exhibit due to travelling distance and the fact that organizers will not let you display on one day only!! (when you can make it with today's commitments) Even a complete newbie I would love to exhibit my attempts if only as an indication to other newbies that we can't all reach these superb standards.

I also disagree with the arguement about it only being a Hobby for us "gentlemen of advancing years" I had several chats with ladies and gentlemen from approx 18 to 40 youngsters to me,,,, When I looked at a display there was a couple of youngsters demonstrating a mill and a lathe, ( I have refrained from adding an age as nowadays Police Officers look about 12)

One thing that I did notice and has appeared on another website is how inconsiderate some show goers are.. I am partially disabled but OK.. Why do some people walk backwards, push you out of the way attack you with there rucksacks and apparently have no regard respect for other people???/ One person at least may read this and realize why he ended up on the floor........, I hope it hurt...

I am newish to model engineering and went to the exhibition Friday. I really enjoyed the day. So impressed with the variety and quality of the exhibits. This is only the second show that I have been to so cannot compare to last year.
