I remember using a Desoutter ? drill many moons ago where I worked. It was silver and green, Ali, I suppose, and very powerful. Never saw them on sale anywhere, but years later I came across a drill stand to suit one of them and bought it for £7, then altered it to suit my Makita 1/2" drill and used it for years until I got rich and bought a floor standing 16 speed machine.. Still have the stand, now changed to suit another make. That stand was built like a battleship, no tinny bits there, cast iron base like a mill table, 1 1/2" upright. Had a small Millers Falls 1/4" too, never see those around either In those days drills had nothing fancy about them A drill was a drill was a drill full stop ! |

If it is only to tell when the cutter is about to contact the work surface, what is wrong with simple toilet paper ? S-W-M-B-O tells me it,s available in many different grades and she knows !! Even if it does not suit the job, you can still find a use for it ! Just a thought ! |

In the late 50,s I was unable to afford a basic 1/4" hand drill, price £3 in Woolworts, since my "Wages" was £2-1-6d per week, no kidding. Now I have a shop full of stuff, mostly from a land across the sea, at a price I can afford. Ah yes, Them were the days, no doubt about it ! |

Forgot to add, my Mother was 91 when she had her eyes done, like another man on the forum, so age is not a factor. |

Clive, I have worn glasses, which I regarded as a curse, all my life, until a few years ago when I had one eye attended to. Took them three years to get to it but the result was unbelievable ! Before, I could just about make out the trees at the end of my garden, next morning, I could count the branches ! Slow forward another two years [they dont like to rush things around here ] and I had the other eye done, same result ! Now I never need glasses for day-to-day use except for reading small print or drill sizes. So, yes go for it, you will not believe the difference it will make, it,s like a whole new world ! As they say "Been there, done that, bought the teeshirt" Best of luck and just hang in there. |

This is something very much on my mind since I dont expect to see 21 ever again. I hate the thought of some smart-arse dealer coming in and clearing out the place for buttons, but I have no-one to pass it on to. So, what to do ? Dont expect it to happen right-away, but who knows ? Happy thoughts for a Friday morning ! In your position, I would think hard about long term storage, it,s not that dear, and you might change your mind later on and regret it. |

Thanks Ian, that was quick indeed ! Excuse my ignorance, but what is a parvalux motor and where do I look for one ? What about the gearbox, is that a separate unit ? |

I have a LUX milling machine to which I would like to fit a power drive in order to raise and lower the head, [I get weary turning the handle ] There was a post on this forum some time ago where some guy used a cordless drill for this, but it must have been some drill because my mill just laughed at me when I tried that. Is there a way of fitting a motor, perhaps using a reduction drive unit ? Have any of you ever done this ? and if so, how ? Any ideas welcome. I believe some of the later mills have this feature. Thanks for any assistance. |

Might sound like a silly question, but why bother with a saw which uses only some of its teeth when you could have a bandsaw using all its teeth ? |

I was told never to use fluorescent lights anywhere near machines with revolving parts, since they could make it look as if the part was still. Not a great idea if the chuck is going at a rate of knots ! |

I find it very difficult to believe that the seller was not aware of that level of damage , but I am surprised that you did nod notice it yourself. These are not just minor cracks, looks like that machine got some rough treatment along the way. I fear you may have bought "A PIG IN A POKE". The time and trouble involved in repairing it would make it a very expensive buy. As Brian Wood said, I think it,s a non-starter. Having seen some of the crap being offered for sale [with a straight face ], I believe nothing I,m told, and little I see. I think you may have a battle on your hands. |
