Thread: Tools and equipment loan list/surplus list
15/02/2021 17:36:25

On the face of it, sounds like a great idea ! As Steviegtr says, could bring problems. I expect most guys are OK but you will always get the odd one, then what do you do ? write it off like that spanner you loaned to that nabour last year and who now cannot remember ever getting it . Been there, done that !

Still, I think it is a good idea ,and fair play to Chris for thinking it up.indecision

Thread: BSW 1 1/2 x 6

Could you not just make a simple boring bar and use a HSS tool bit ground to 55* ?

I made two backplates for my lathe like that ,simple and cheap.

Thread: crane uprate - where would you add some metal ?
09/02/2021 11:43:22

As so many others have said DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT !!

If ever there was a case of letting sleeping dogs lie, this is it !

A trip to Rehab is worth while if only to see the results of silly undertakings.

Some of the things people do ???????????!sad

Thread: Hey you! What lathe? Why?
07/02/2021 17:09:26

Please accept my tuppence worth along with all the above much more valuable advice.

I bought a Craftsman longbed because I had no idea what I wanted to do [still not sure !] but because it seemed big enough to do anything that might come along.

I dont make models [dont know how, and I have a short fuse ] but I found that machine perfect for doing running repairs, making odd bits and pieces and passing many a happy hour rather than looking at the crap on TV.

My advice would be to buy something, just to get started and then see where you want to go. You can always sell on and upgrade.cheeky

Thread: Warco Super Major Milling Machine - Stripping Gearbox
01/02/2021 10:54:28

From looking at this, seems like a good idea to leave my mill alone !

As I said before Let sleeping dogs lie !! If it aint broke, dont fix it.cheeky

Thread: Warco super major milling machine
31/01/2021 14:19:35

That mill looks much the same as my LUX, with 6 speeds from the gearbox.

My machine is 3 PH, yours looks to be 1PH, and as Dave said, could be just that the motor is getting no feed.

Never knew those mills had z and x feed motors .

Start by checking your electrical supply.

Thread: 8 inch 4 jaw Chuck on WM290 lathe?
30/01/2021 10:27:01

I have an 8" 4 jaw chuck which came with my Craftsman lathe, and yes it is heavy to lift.

That,s why I made my lifting hoist, as shown in my Album, which works a treat. That chuck falling on your foot would not be a good experience.frown

Thread: What machine tools are these?
28/01/2021 09:49:24

Never know what you might find when you start digging !

Thread: HSS Tool Geometry
27/01/2021 09:49:10

As S-O-D and others have said, you wont go too far wrong if you follow Sparey,s advice.

Everything is explained in simple terms, and more important, aimed at the small lathe.

You dont need exact angles ect unless you are working for pay, and even then ??.

I have been using Sparey,s book since I began and have never had any problems [except the ones I made myself ! ]

Check it out and forget about getting everything "Exact" life is too short for that.wink
