I recycle my scrap in my local centre, they take almost everything and all for 2 Euro ! No excuse to dump anything in The Sunny South East ! |
Thread: Cleaning my lathe |

I clean off every scrap of dirt I can find, then I polish everything to a high finish before wrapping it all up nice and tidy and wishing it sweet dreams. ! Needless to say, I seldom switch it on No-N0-No, that,s not good for it, it,s only there to be looked at, not used ! However, in the real World, I use it to get the job done, then clean off the heavy muck before getting on with something else. I regard it as a machine to be used, not to be looked at. I can buy ornaments cheaper. |

Sad to say, Bernard, that kind of response seems to be quite common these days. Hope you get sorted out OK, could be a nice machine when you get it running. |

I dont think it,s the starter you should be looking at. Perhaps you should check the position of the links in the motor terminal box ? One way for star, other way for delta. |
Thread: Left hand thread on a Chester drill spindle |
23/08/2021 16:21:58 |
That would seem to be very similar to the setup on a chopsaw, which has a left hand screw, or nut, clamping the blade in place. Nothing unusual there, I think. As Brian Woods said, a washer should sort it out. |
Thread: Moving vice on mill table.... |

Sounds like your vise is being clamped to something, just not the table ! Time to have a look to see what. Vises clamped to milling machines do not move. |

Some of you may remember my seeking advice about a similar problem some time ago. I had made an adjustable stop for my cross slide, which worked, sort of, but was just too light. The advice I received was to beef it up, and Hey Presto it worked ! I still use it from time to time and once set, it is a pleasure to use, since it has three different settings. Easy enough to make. |

Nice tidy workshop, Jason, mine used to be like that, many moons ago ! Now, it,s more like a tiphead, everything is there, it,s just a question of finding it ! Anyone else in the club ? Dont be shy ! |
Thread: Colchester Bantam Lathe |

When I had my garage/workshop built, I had the floor smooth finished [the builder thought I was mad, maybe he was right ], cost a bit more, not a lot, but it makes moving stuff around so easy ! Rough floors--heavy machines= A-P-I-T-A. Smooth floors+ rollers =a simple op., Even so, take care, if she tips over, dont try to stop her, you wont, just stay out of the line of fire ! Nice machine, never had one, had to settle for Chinese junk, still going 20+ years on. Have fun !

Thread: Beginner Lathe, Chester Craftsman. |
31/07/2021 18:55:13 |
Hi Blake, I have a Craftsman lathe for the last 20 years and offer my comments, for what they are worth, [perhaps not a lot ] Mine came with two chucks, faceplate, two steadies, centres and a few gearwheels. Mine is a belt drive, not a gear head machine, with a low speed of about 40 RPM, great for screwcutting. There is quite a wide range of threads which can be cut, both Metric and Whit., Two threads which are not listed are 1,75 [12mm ] and 3.5 [30mm ], both of which I use from time to time, but they can be cut [ask if you want to know ] Did not have any issue with the fixed steady, but the traveling steady seems to be WAY OUT OF LINE ., N ever needed to use it until recently and thought I was seeing things. Most of the screws used at assy seem to have been total shit, I replaced most of them. Paintwork not great, but I dont care about the look of a machine as long as it works. Regarding response or service from Chester, I will say nothing ! They did have a man called John there some years ago, who was helpful, to a fault, and never failed to respond to a call, sad to say, he was not replaced when he retired, [Hope you are keeping well John ] Perhaps Chester are more interested in the bigger market, who knows ? However, you must remember that Chester are regarded as a "Sacred Cow" on this Forum. To sum up, I am happy enough with my machine, it was built to a price but does all I want, that seems to be the name of the game, you want better, you pay big bucks. When I was a young lad [dont ask when that was ], did I ever think I could afford a lathe ? Did you ?

Thread: Leveling machines |
26/07/2021 17:50:51 |
From what I have read, before and now ,it appears that it would make no difference if the machine was standing on its head, like a vertical lathe, provided that it was not in twist. Open to correction, as usual. |
Thread: What on Earth would this be used for? |
26/07/2021 17:36:09 |
!Them were the days, when men were men, and women were glad about it ! My Father had one of those things, would put the fear of God into you ! Sad to say, it went AWOL, like many other things, when I had to "Move House " On the same track, I once saw a Primus stove about 5 times as big as any I had ever seen before, I dont know what size the tank was, but you would not carry it around on your bike like I did with my little one ! I think it must have been Ex Army. |
