Thread: How can I bend this ?
27/10/2022 19:25:22

Just take a ride around your nearest industrial estae and look for a sheet metal or fabrication shop. You dont get anything unless you ask. Somebody will point you in the right direction. You could search online for local fabricators and call them and ask. If you were near Corby I could get a local firm to bend it for you. Which ever way you do it it needs to be neat. Good luck.

Thread: Soldering iron
25/10/2022 16:42:14

I have a Amtech 20556 model. The soldering tip is unscrewed to use the "blowlamp". When the tip is screwed on the whole blowlamp/tip assembly is pushed forward against a spring by thumb pressure. A flame is then used to light the burner through a hole in the side. The assembly is them released backwards slowly to get the flame into the correct place to heat the tip. If moved too quickly the flame will go out. So I find leaving the tip assembly in the forward position for a minute for the flame to stabilize and preheat slightly does the trick. Excellent little soldering iron that I find very usefull.

Thread: De-gassing ally melt.
21/10/2022 12:02:50

Many people melt aluminium and end up with excellent results without any degassing. Depends on how good your original scrap is. I did a piece of 50mm x 125mm 2 weeks a go and machined it yesterday and it looks great. Use good known stock (not cans) Ali wheels & extrusions are excellent for the job. Dont overheat it when casting.

Thread: Why aren't there plain washers on the market specifically for use under the heads of cap screws?
19/10/2022 11:34:51

If you cannot find them stack some on a mandrel/bolt and turn the required amount off. I know its a pain but quicker than sarching for and awaiting delivery.

Thread: What thread
19/10/2022 11:30:43

A couple of years ago I bought a few different indexable tip holders from a sale at an engineering works. They came with a couple of 125mm long right angle torx spanners. All of the screws holding the tips in were so tight I had to drill most of the heads off and resort to Mole grips to remove the screws. The screws really do not need to be very tight. The little plastic flag on the torx tool only needs a little thumb and finger pressure to get to the correct torque setting.

+1 for JB Cutting Tools. Jenny has always been helpful when contacted. I bought quite a few indexable tips from her at the MMEE on the Friday.

Another pain in the ... is the assumption that because you have internet access you must have a mobile phone signal in your house not standing on the roof to get the confirmation code.

Been through this today with BT for a friend. He lives in a "notspot" so texts are very difficult to get. But BT although they admit reception is bad in his area still insisted on texting a code to him so he could confirm his identity. The code never arrived so that job has stalled untill he takes his laptop & phone to another location to complete the process.

Thread: Issue 321, Cover picture raises questions.
17/10/2022 17:57:47

What you should and should not do is a matter for conjecture. Many people use an endmill in a drill chuck to flat bottom a bore. I for one when I was a kid used endmills in a drill press to modify many toys etc as I was not allowed to use the mill. I always made sure my father was not around though. I never had one come loose. I watched a video today of a machinist in the far east using a large lathe as a milling machine. He used an endmill in a Jacobs chuck to mill out a slot in some material. That went ok. Myford, Boxford and many other companies supplied milling attachments for their lathes. They probably knew full well that the chuck would be used with an endmill. I can understand your concern but maybe a read of the article would have shed some light on the situation.

Thread: To Old

Posted by Peter G. Shaw on 13/10/2022 11:01:19:

I took early retirement aged 51. I was, when all said and done, in a position to do it and the company wanted rid of staff. I did do a few years in a part-time job which in reality was not worth-while doing but it did at least get me out of the house. And, yes, I've had so far 28 years of retirement. However, I did make a mistake a few years ago and said something about pensions to my two oldest children. Never again! I got well and truly jumped on, and told that they would never have the same pension that I have. Since then, I have kept strangely quiet about finances! I wonder why.

I'm never asked for advice, especially when my children have far more experience of the rough and tumble of life than I've ever had. Occasionally a grandson might ask what I think, but that's only because I do have some experience & knowledge that no-one else in the family has. But in general, my certificates, such as they are, date from 1971 and before. And even then, I lot of what I learned has become obsolete. And that I do find dispiriting.

Old, obsolete, and outdated.

Perhaps I should creep away quietly and go lie down under a stone somewhere.

Peter G. Shaw

Never hide under a stone Peter you are of no use there. I am in a similar position at nearly 75. Been retired from a full time job for almost 20 years. Worked part time 2 days a week for about 5 years after that. I also was lucky to be able financially to not need to work after my 55th birthday. Not regreted it once. I still wonder sometimes how I ever had time to work at all. I still seem to be in demand from the younger family members for advise, repairs & part making. Health wise only a few niggles so far. I just take it day to day and enjoy what I have whilst I have it.

Thread: Should I use anti-vibration mounts under Boxford AUD cabinet?
12/10/2022 17:39:22

Nigel. The flap on top of the headstock is supposed to be hinged. It is there so you can oil the backgear shaft.

I just have 6 small squares of 1/8" insertion rubber under the pads on my AUD. No need for anymore.

RDG sent me a discount code when I last ordered.

Would it be immoral to send it to any subscriber who contacts me, off list?

MC

Most times you get a blue 5% discount card on purchases. This can be used almost indefinitely on later purchases.

I have been using mine for about 5 years. Not sure if it is transferable.
