Thread: Weight driven clockwork roasting spit
19/11/2022 16:56:15

Live and learn. It seems to have something to do with the pitch or angle of the threads on the worm. (SeeCog drives worm) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykeiByIel64&t=299s). I´m sure there are better illustrations out there.

18/11/2022 23:49:32

Am I daft,? in order to get this to run you need to spin the "fly" by hand, and when it stops spinning the spit will stop rotating.

Thread: Identifying a webcam module
12/11/2022 20:23:12

Or Google USB\VID_0BDA&PID_5880.

12/11/2022 20:17:54

Google Realtek 5880 uvc. Seems to fit.

12/11/2022 20:06:31

Seems to fit, or what are the chances? The problem is I couldn´t track down the exact product. The Realtek site is chaotic or it is a special for one customer...

12/11/2022 18:26:07

In hexadecimal Vendor_ID3034 seems to be 0BDA and the Product_ID22656 is 0x5880.

The Vendor_ID points to Realtek, no luck with the product ID.

Sorry, the easy ways didn´t. There are quite a few modules out there which, particularly with your knowledge of microscopy optics, could probably be adapted to whatever you have in mind..

Best Wishes,

Dick H

The format of the Vendor and Product IDs looks a bit too short and simple. If they mean anything it probably only refers to the circuitry not the the chip itself. There are lots of 8Mp 4K cameras and modules out there based on Sony IMX sensors. To find out what is in there I think you might need to get your screw driver out and have a closer look. I did suspect it might have come from Realtek. You´re not losing your Google-Fu, it´s just difficult to find out without taking a can opener to it. There are whole lists of Mac compatible cameras out there but the ID´s don´t fit any i can see. Another complication is ,is the visualiser equiped with auto focus?

Regards,

Dick H.

Thread: New pins for watch bracelet.
21/09/2022 19:17:25

I can´t tell from the photo, but I don´t think it´s a spring pin, rather a pin with a small screw at each end.

See |Link|. It is a reasonable make anyway.

Thread: Solvent for epoxy adhesive
19/09/2022 11:35:44

Before it has set much acetone should do the trick. Restorers used to like epoxy for repairing ceramics because it could be removed once set by soaking in pineapple juice. I thought this was an old wives tale or something I half heard on the telly but have a look at < Link >.

Thread: OpenAstroTracker
12/09/2022 13:46:39

Been ogling these astro tracking mounts for a while. Did you 3D print it yourself or buy a kit? Any experiences getting the firmware and PC interface to work? Any feedback welcome, I fancy building one for the winter. I live somewhere where you can still see the Milky Way on a good night (and the neighbours´ blasted security lights doesn´t come on).

Thread: How to create carvings with CNC
15/07/2022 20:07:38

One of the members (name forgotten) here has a web site (search Chesnut Pens) . There you will find downloads for converting photos into lithophanes and a few more interesting bits and pieces.

Thread: cutting pyrex tube to length
16/04/2022 18:24:20

Gently scribe a line round the tube and hot spot it by heating the end a bit of glass rod to red heat and touching the hot end on the scribed line. Hopefully it will break along the dotted line. Briefly flame polish the cut end.

Thread: DAB radio
30/12/2021 12:09:37

I had similar problems and built a cheap and cheerful antenna based on a bit of coax. I can´t find the recipe I used but this link shows you how* Link * (https://iamjoost.com/2018/02/17/diy-dab-antenna/). You need a bit of tape or shrink tubing to make a tidy job of it and stop the braid unravelling.

Before this I had the normal indoor dipole type which used to come with receivers and people wandering about the room would cause shadowing and fallout. Seems to work (at least here in Bavaria) for DAB and FM The transmitters are about 50km. away.

Thread: What to do with a sticky (as in toffee) portable radio
25/12/2021 19:48:38

The soft touch coating is probably a polyurethane which breaks down with age. This* Link * (https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2012089827A1/en) describes the problem, the polyester segment hydrolyses, the molecular weight drops and you land up with a sticky mess.

Thread: Where to buy hss sets at good price in european online shops?
21/12/2021 14:58:50

Perhaps not the cheapest but have a look at RC Machines. **Link**. I´ve used them a few times over the years. 16mm seems to be the biggest they do.

To Zachary Rohrer,

The second hand pushes on to a tapered extension of the arbor that carries the escape wheel. You can see it in my photo from 09.06.2017 and Stephen Benson´s photos from 30.12.2016. I built my clock with steel pinions according to the second spiral bound book from ritetime publications. I also have the red jacketed first book which uses lantern pinions. The layout and other details of mechanism in the two books are subtly different so beware.

Thread: Synthetic paint thinners PT8 vs. white spirit
30/10/2021 20:03:38

If you go with too a volatile a solvent when applying the paint you may get artifacts such as an "orange peel" surface.

30/10/2021 19:19:13

See wiki on "White Spirit" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_spirit. Both white spirit and the material supplied under the CAS (Chemical Abstracts) No. 64742-88-7 are hydrocarbon mixtures, i.e a bit of straight chain alkanes, cyclic alkanes perhaps a touch of aromatics. The mixtures are usually classified by their boiling points. Your mix is White spirit type 0, (See https://wedocs.unep.org/bitstream/handle/20.500.11822/29645/HSG103W.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y), it appears to be a bit lower boiling, ie. more lower alkanes. So white spirit in general would probably work but this particular cut would be best.

Chemically celullose thinners are a different kettle of fish ( see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacquer_thinner) covering more polar solvents such as ketones and esters (ie. things like acetone and MEK and esters such as butyl acetate (pear drops smell)).
