It might be worth trying to find an old style wind up car jack and using that under the table (assuming that there is space between the webs that you can see in the photo). I'm thinking of an old style one with a gear driven "crown wheel" acing on an acme screw, not one of the modern cantilever type. |

Sean. It's probably worth building a separate control pod that you can mount on or beside the machine. The ventilation slots on invertor drives are not set up to cope with swarf and a piece in the wrong place would kill the drive. A simple pod with go, stop(and/or emergency stop) and a speed control would be easy to set up. Martin |

Good to hear that its all running. How much metal have you machined this afternoon? The wire links that you fitted can be used for an emergency stop function. Give me a shout if you decide you want to fit one. Martin |

Ok Try the links and see what happens. I'll PM you my mobile number, although I'm going out so I may not be able to answer. Martin. P.S. I think that some of your problems with the drive come from it being second hand. Whoever has removed it from its previous installation has probably removed all of the wiring, including some that should have been there when the drive came from the manufacturer (like links to HC,H1 and H2) Edited By Martin Cargill on 13/08/2017 12:45:10 |

Sean. Have you got links in place linking HC,H1 and H2 ? Martin

Big cold chisel to notch either side of the bolt then either hammer from side to side or the thick walled tube. Then hammer any stub down (assuming the bolts are not chemical type) Martin

Sean.
There is a second hand inverter on ebay just now that will run your motor. Price is £55 (buy it now price). This will give you a whole range of simple drive options including reversing and variable speed etc. Its got to be easier fitting/running this than any of the other options for trying to run a 3 phase motor from a single phase supply. The angle iron used in the manufacture of beds (in the old days) was a form of spring steel. Those of us familiar with the stuff will recollect how thin it was, given its purpose. It was good for repair / strengthening brackets because it was considerably thinner and it tended to have a tighter angle internal than the round corner of angle iron. Martin

When using screened cable only connect ONE end to earth. That way the screening works and does not lead to the possibility of circulating currents in the screen.

Looking at your CAD mockup. Even if you had machined it the right way around surely the angle of the cutting face used on the back turn of the tapping motion would push the swarf into the thread rather than cutting it off? Martin

The reason I said blade flange is that some blades use drive pins to stop the blade from tightening and to stop them from spinning off during braking. I see a few of them that have a range of holes to work with different blade pin holes(it's easier to drill a flange than to drill a hole in a blade) |

Thread: Arboga E830 Drill |
15/04/2017 17:33:10 |
Thor, Many thanks for your prompt response. Unfortunately the link you have provided is for the ER830, this is the radial arm version of the drill that I have and many of the features are different because the controls have all been moved to the left hand side of the drill (I had already found this drawing in my search). Thank you for trying. Martin

Wanting a bigger, more robust pillar drill I purchased an Arboga E830. I looked at it thinking that, as the motor was mounted on the top of the drill, it would be easy to convert from three to single phase to suit my workshop electrics. Sadly this was not to be the case as when I removed the motor I found it had a shaft about 10" long with two gears on the end. Not to be put off by this I ended up lengthening the shaft on the other end of the motor and added a belt drive with a single phase motor piggy backed on the side of the main motor. I now have a serious 2.5 HP drill (with power feed!), an MT4 spindle and speeds from 80 to 890 rpm. The problem that I have is finding a manual for the machine, I can buy one from Lathes.co.uk but they want £39 - this is more than a quarter of what I paid for the machine. Does anyone have a copy of the manual for this machine?

I know this is about emoticons but nicknames seem to have crept in. A mate of mine used to run a pub, one of the regulars was always called "Nimrod" by his drinking colleagues, but my mate knew his name was Dave. Eventually he asked one of the regulars why the name Nimrod? "That's easy" replied the regular " Every time he comes around he's looking for a sub" Martin C

Baby Wipes and Swarfega. Set three small piles of baby wipes ready for use, "wash" hands with swarfega, then use the baby wipes, by the third pile hands should be clean. Works for me when customer locks up before I can get washed after a job. Martin C

Are you changing the pulleys? A Z section belt will not fit A section pulleys! It may drive when you first fit it but it will very soon end up trying to drive on the bottom of the pulley and it will start slipping |
