Thread: Annoying milling cutter diving into the work

Hello Lee

No i'm sure it would not happen if i had locked the quill. i did start to lock the quill before i realised what was causing it.

And i know i should lock it anyway.

Henry.

I have had this problem with my osaki mmd250 mill a couple of times. it turns out it was where i was using the fine tuning wheel and when it touched the work it took the backlash out of it and pulled the head down. i always turn the knob to raise the head upwards further than i need to then come down with the head to take the backlash out, that stopped it happening for me.

I used to live in Hoddesdon but moved to Thurrock Essex about 10 years ago. I still come back to have a walk around Hertford And hartham common, Very beautiful place. They do courses in turnford college for model engineering. And you have got glr kennions supplies in roydon.

turnford college is a good idea and I will give glr kennions a look up as it's not that far from hoddesdon thanks

I did a couple of terms in turnford and it is well worth doing if you want to learn lathe and milling.

Hello Ron. Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking about cast iron but i ordered some steel square this morning.

Your cast iron one looks good though.

I hope mine comes out as nice as brians.

Henry, it will be OK to do as you say making them from steel or brass and then fitting a bronze bush or you could make a steel plate with oversize hole matching the spigot size that locates in the hornplate and silver solder a bronze "teardrop" shape to it with an integral spigot that locates in the plates hole . Then treat it as a casting to bore bearing and drill other holes

Thank you very much for the reply.

Yes that is another idea. i think i will just sleeve it though.

Looks a nice job. You could have got away with steel or brass as its a bit easier to machine and just put a bronze sleeve in the centre. A lot of the parts on these small engines are done from gun metal to make casting easier and avoid hard spots rather than its bearing qualities.

Virtually all the minnie could be done without castings, maybe just the cylinder and flywheel to make things a bit quicker. Done as a road loco you would not even need the spoked flywheel.

Hello Jason. i am going to buy the materials for my minnie shaft bearings Would it be ok to make them out of brass or mild steel and sleeve them with bronze rather than buy the more expensive bronze?

Thanks Henry.

I have used this thread as a reference a lot as well in the last year.

Thread: What Did You Do Today 2019

I started cutting some spokes for the minnie, i think the angle grinder is going to have to come out to do the rough cuts its too much with a piercing saw. i need to find some tube for the wheels as well.

Yesterday i made the foundation ring of my minnie boiler all fit nice. i just need to silver solder the backhead and foundation ring on now.

Thanks everyone.

I am based in Rayleigh Essex.

anyone local to me?

I am in Ockendon. i found the bits i said about earlier at Dunton boot sale.

17/01/2019 09:23:46

I got very lucky at a boot sale and bought a tool box full of mills drills and different bits for £40 most of them new. They are one of the best quality makes as well.

Thread: The new talking Mercedes
15/11/2018 19:51:43

I have seen on Bentleys and some porsches audi and vw printed on the parts. They are nothing like the Real Bentleys anymore.

15/11/2018 08:16:45

Mercedes are not like they used to be, Lots of plastic bits and electronics. They seem to go wrong more than the average car now especially the sprinter vans.

I don't like these cars without dipsticks either at all.

It is nice when you do things like that and they go right. i have not tried cutting threads on the lathe itself yet.

Hello Guy

i don.t know what area you are in but they do model engineering courses in Broxbourne in Hertfordshire College.

The smallest lathe is a Chester DB10. If there is no courses near you just read books and look on the internet and ask on here.

Henry.

I silver soldered the motion pad and cylinder pad in the minnie boiler i thought it best to do that first. i have been putting it off for ages as i was dreading soldering but it went well.img_20180812_192401.jpgimg_20180812_192351.jpg
