Thread: Cigarette Papers
13/07/2020 19:32:52

I started using "fag papers" for rolling a smoke when I bought a house and took out a mortgage in 1976, could not afford Players then and have always used fag paper for edge finding, feelers for flatness and for timing engines, infact I timed a 1954 Enfield this weekend and used the spoke down the plughole method to find TDC.

Casting my mind back the Red papers were the standard thickness as was the Green papers but the Green had cut corners for easier rolling in those little rolling machines, and the Blue papers were a thinner. My favourite smoke was Three Castles a very light brown tobacco, sadly it became unavailable in the 90s so I changed to tailor made Regal, then in 2015 I had a heart attack, had three stents fitted and the consultant said "you shouldn't smoke anymore" so I didn't, and I haven't since. But I often fancy a smoke but the fancy only lasts few seconds, but saying that if the heart attack hadn't happened I would be still be smoking I suppose costing me £3,500 per year.

I have always used Wellseal, and petrol will remove it from casings and hands easily.

Thread: Where can I get a 3/4" strain relief bush?
14/06/2020 17:47:36

I would think 20mm is the new 3/4, may need to open the hole a tad, along with 16, 25 etc etc.

Drilled an Eclipse all hard blade yesterday, used a 3.4 carbide drill but first heated the area to be drilled to cherry and let it cool, then I no problem.

Thread: Power feed - 'which motor shall I buy'?
20/05/2020 08:43:51

I'm with Steve but I prefer the Vauxhall Astra wiper motor to the Mondeo wink cost £15, 12V 10A power source £10, speed controller, fwd/rev switch and box £10.......... all told £35 and of course you have to make the drive unit

Have one on my SPG miller and one on my Super 7.

Thread: Centre finding
28/04/2020 10:34:57

Taking Jason's advice (thank you) I placed an order with Tracy Tools for some spotting drills yesterday order placed at 10 45am and they duly arrived today at 10 15am, that is wonderful service, even more wonderful considering the conditions the country is in at the moment, and the postage was only £3.

Kind regards Colin

27/04/2020 10:31:12

Thanks Jason for the info. I shall buy 3 6 and 8mm from Tracy always find them great to deal with.

Thanks again Colin

27/04/2020 09:25:05

Okay, so it seems after using centre drills for fifty four years as a toolmaker I have now read there is a better way of starting a hole, every day is a school day, so can someone tell me what is the preferred size of angle (90, 120 etc) spotting drill to buy for general hobby work and where to buy them from.

Regarding centre finding, on the my mill my fixed vice jaw is my Y zero point and a stop plate bolted to right side of vice is my X zero point, (checked regularly). Trial hole is drilled and checked usually within plus or minus .1mm, good enough for me.

Kind regards from sunny Gower

Thread: Motorcycle General Discussion

Surely your bike qualifies for the rolling 40 year old Road Tax & MoT exemption if re-classified as "Historic" ?

Hi Nigel,

It does qualify under the forty year rule but although it costs nothing to tax it still has to be taxed, I saved this bike from the scrappy and only two things missing were the carb and the inner chain case which I made.

As Royal Enfield was being discussed here is my 1954 Meteor 700cc, has been taxed and insured since first of March but stands waiting for the lock down to ease, along with my other machines.

Hi Malcolm,

I found a video on youtube of a James scooter and near the end you can just make out the air filter, not sure if this is your model.

Thread: Tapping (full depth or reduced)
24/03/2020 21:39:32

I can't remember the last time I tapped a thread by hand, maybe finished tapping a blind hole but I always drill the holes in the mill and tap under power for M4 and above and below M4 spindle in neutral and turn chuck by hand, clean and square very important.

Never used QCTP even when working, standard four way tool post, one chamfer tool, one carbide turning tool and an Eclipse part off tool, the fourth position was free for specials ie threading, forming etc, etc

Now I have retired I run a Myford S7 with HSS tools, tangential for turning, chamfer, screw cutting forming and boring and a Chinese mill, both machines have DRO and the vice on the mill is my zero for X and Y.
