This is shown with tongue very firmly in cheek as I'm quite sure you don't want to spend probably thousands of pounds on tobacco just to get the empty tins!

Dunno about tobacco tins but I consume a fantastic quantity of Altoids/Curiously Strong Mints and have lots of those tins.

For the original posting (thermal) application the Seek Thermal Camera (for phones, tablets etc) is reasonably affordable. Amazon carries them. (AliExpress has some really low prices too but they seem to be of the "you can't be sure what you're really buying" kind).

I have one which I got just before life got really complicated at a personal level so I haven't used it much. I did go around the shop and it told me what gets hot on the machines. What I want to do while it's still around freezing (in Ontario) is to look at the house from outside and see where the major heat leaks are.

Thread: What’s wrong with my knurling

I seem to remember Graham Meeke came up with a pretty nifty knurling tool. Perhaps he'll comment.

Thread: Constantly logging in
08/03/2023 19:13:37

Don't know whether this is related but:

I have several sites (e.g. local drugstore chain) which often invokes two factor login because I am "using a different computer to log in than I normally use". I always log in from the same computer though.

I've discovered that this happens whenever the browser (Firefox) updates. Apparently that changes the "signature" of my machine.

(Even on the ESR channel Firefox updates about once a week these days - heaven knows how often the regular channel, which is little more than beta-test, updates.)

I know this site dumps your login every time you change machines .... perhaps this effect is related?

Only the tracking number had been given, and I wonder if these numbers are handed out before the courier even sets eyes on the package.

Fairly typical I would say. I normally get tracking numbers which, if checked immediately, lead to some form of "awaiting shipment from sender" (I'm talking other couriers here .... we don't have EVRI in Canada).

lots of people post links by including the website address in text.

I believe some people do this for security reasons .... you know where you are being directed this way, whereas with a link you could be directed to somewhere nasty. (Yeah, there are ways to read it but not everyone seems to know.)

You'll be fine

We walked in streets where every vehicle brake in the universe was asbestos, and lived in houses and worked in premises lined with the stuff

Asbestos is a problem if you're a demolition guy and you're cutting it up with a chop saw and breathing in the dust

Bit simplistic really, Ady. It's not a 1:1 "here's some asbestos", "now you die.

It's more of a: remove all that asbestos and lung cancer rates in the popoulation (amongst other things) drop significantly.

Thread: Microsft 'Edge'

OK, I concede - I'm a minority of one.

Couple of points before I go:

- make no mistake, the Linux swerve is not "topic drift". It's topic hijack plain and simple.

- my issue (and only mine apparently) is not that Linux is occasionally suggested as an alternative solution to whatever Windows problem a user is having. It's that it's rammed down our throats by the Linux bores every time a Windows question is asked. It is just so predictable.

And yes, I have run Linux in the past, in several versions and forks (who can keep count). Including the shell which I suspect most here would run a mile from. I've also worked with UNIX and QNX in the distant past. At my stage in life, Windows suits me better. Please accept that I know what's best for me as much as you do for yourselves.

21/02/2023 01:20:11

Did you guys ever consider starting your own Linux thread rather than giving us all the benefit of your "enlightenment" in every Windows discussion that takes place here? The question, as in other cases, was one about a specific Windows problem not a request for alternatives to Windows.

I get that you like Linux. Can you get that others are not interested in hearing about it at every opportunity?

" ** I initially included the link to the Amazon listing but it included a lot of undecipherable data and I was afraid (since I have an Amazon account) that it might have included my account data."

.

At a guess, this one: **LINK**

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sparco-Stapler-Capacity-Standard-SPR01316/dp/B001B0GWKU

MichaelG.

.

P.S. the undecipherable data typically tells ‘them’ how you reached the page.

Thanks, Michael, that's the one. As far as the undecipherable data goes, I couldn't find any way of positively determining whether or not it contains identifying data. It seems that Amazon already "knows me" on every computer in the house (which is quite a few). Scary (the Amazon thing not the number of computers wink )

The Sparco Long Reach Stapler suggested by Peter doesn't seem too be sold in the UK.

I actually found it on both the Canadian and UK Amazon sites. I originally posted a link to the Amazon.co.uk listing but as I said:

" ** I initially included the link to the Amazon listing but it included a lot of undecipherable data and I was afraid (since I have an Amazon account) that it might have included my account data."

18/02/2023 17:02:22

I bought a Sparco Long Reach Stapler (Amazon have them **) years ago to go with a booklet printer (ClickBook) that lets me print documents double-sided, 4 pages to a sheet and fold over to make the booklet. Amongst many other formats.

The stapler will actually go to (up to) the centre of a 24" sheet.

More power to Soee for making his own. These devices can be very handy at times.

** I initially included the link to the Amazon listing but it included a lot of undecipherable data and I was afraid (since I have an Amazon account) that it might have included my account data. Gotta watch this stuff.

Though I don't think it has been discussed since Morton's took over so outcome could be different.

Absolutely - Morton's might be agreeable to releasing DVDs where previous owners were not. But Neil was seeking to establish the level of interest here should they do so, which I believe is already apparent.

As far as the obsolescence of computer DVD drives, computer chains here are still selling them both internal and external (USB) versions.

Thread: eBay Tax Collection
17/02/2023 22:30:40

Apparently eBay have been doing this for all sales within Canada for 6 months I just discovered.

This pretty much covers it.

As far as I can tell, they only tax purchases that are wholly (buyer and seller) within Canada. Purchasing from a seller outside the country doesn't attract tax.

Just curious - in the UK, does eBay add sales taxes for used items from private sellers these days?

They are apparently doing this in Canada now.

Finally, I was contacted by a subscriber asking if we will ever publish a DVD of back issues up to date. Let me know if you would be interested in such a thing, and if there's sufficient interest it may be a possibility.

Considering the number of times this has been discussed off and on in these forums over the years, that sounds .... well, a trifle coy.
