Hi All - Can anyone offer any help in researching Godalmings (Surrey) old Railway Station which, after the extension of the original line through to Portsmouth became known as the Godalming’s Goods Station. Google searches reveals just the one photograph showing a train reversing out from the old station but I have not been able to discover any more. I would particularly be interested in finding any article from the railway press e.g. The Railway Magazine, Backtrack and similar journals to expand on the subject.

There’s some info and photos in “Woking to Portsmouth by Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith, Middleton Press.

It was just north of the river Wey, about 1/3 mile from the present Farncombe station, a housing estate now.

_igp2948.jpg_igp2947.jpgI have found evidence on Ordnance Survey maps. The modern Explorer 145 shows two roughly parallel unclassified roads running approximately N-S ending at a school near the roundabout on the A3100. The much older 1" to the mile OS 124 printed in 1920 actually shows a section of track in the same position.

Ask the same question on RMweb you are more likely to get more response.

list an 1895 map of Godalming, which includes the New Station but without knowing the area it is hard to know if what you are looking for is also there.

I hope this link will get you to their catalogue page but this forum software did funny things getting it into this message so I am not so sure. Otherwise work your way through their website.

I've spent many a happy hour trawling through the National Library of Scotlands maps on this page. Change the drop down menus at the top to change the reference maps (don't forget to change the country, there are many options that unexpectedly work).

Jon Lawes gives a very interesting reference.

I have just looked using the OS 25 inch series 1892-1914 and it seems to show the Old Station with all the goods yard track layouts.

A lot to explore.

I may be imagining it, but I seem to remember seeing sets of buffers visible from the bus in the early 60's.

As a newbie, I have only nust seen this post

I am presently modelling Farncombe and Godalming Signals, after resarching for ages I have amassed a staggering 6 photographs! Hmm fortunately that will leave me room for some imagination. If I can offer any maps, signals diagram etc. Please pm me.

Grahame.

Is there a local museum in the area? They might have some information.
