Thread: Myford motor wiring problems
09/09/2020 09:53:41

Typical values for a Brook .25 hp motor would be of the order of about 10 ohms for the run winding and about 40 ohms for the start winding

For 0.75 hp would be a bit lower

The start capacitor in series with the start winding would be of the order of 40-50 microfarads

Hope this helps

Fair comment - I can only plead advancing (even advanced) years in mitigation smiley

Oops! On re-reading the post I see it is the gearbox gears you need the info for, not the change gears.

Sorry for for not reading the original post correctly

15/07/2020 23:48:03

I think the gears are 18 D.P. with a 14.5-degree pressure angle and 0.125" depth of tooth. They are 3/8" wide, have a 9/16" bore, and have a 1/8" keyway.

I stand to be corrected on this and suggest you wait for others to confirm, or otherwise

Couldn't find chuck key. Tried usual technique of tidying up but to no avail. Phoned friend who had been in and accused him (in jest) of hiding/stealing it. He called round and within 5 seconds said "you mean this chuck key" - sitting in full view on shelf at side of lathe. Well seen I had my 77th birthday last week!

Thread: Harrison M300 Thread Dial Indicator (Imperial)
18/03/2018 19:10:58

Having recovered from a bug that flattened me a couple of weeks ago, I set out to make a new cog for the DTI on my Harrison M300 (Imperial) lathe using the invaluable information provided by John Brookes of the Harrison Users Group.

The first attempt was a bit of a fiasco but served its purpose as I realised that it would be much simpler to make a single component using the DTI spindle as a mandrel rather than the original separate collar and cog.

A suitable length of 40mm diameter Delrin was cut and bored 3/8" to fit the spindle. The keyway in the spindle is 1/8" so, using a piece of 1/8" square tool steel ground to a cutting chamfer at one end, I was able to press the blank onto the spindle cutting the way in the Delrin blank as it went.

The outside diameter was turned down to 35.5mm and the shoulder to 7/8" dia x 3/4" long in accordance with John's information

dsc05550r.jpg

An extension plate was mounted on the shaper box to provide enough length to mount the dividing head, chuck and spindle. The dividing head was angled at approximately 5deg which was what I had measured roughly from the leadscrew

dsc05519r.jpg

The chuck was then transferred from the lathe to the dividing head and a jack made from a scrap piece of aluminium was mounted to support the outer end of the spindle

dsc05561r.jpg

I had no information about the profile required for the cutter, but using John's photographs and a bit of "guesstimation", I ground a shaping tool to what I thought would do, given the undemanding nature of the profile

dsc05563r.jpg

So, with fingers crossed, the first cut was made to the depth given by John

dsc05568r.jpg

This went well, so, with great concentration, the rest ot the cuts were made

dsc05571r.jpg

It is always a relief to complete the last cut without any disasters, especially when you arrive back to where you started! smiley

The finished article

And the bonus is - it works!

With many thanks to John and all the others who responded to my request for information

Thread: Fitting new bearings to gear shafts in milling machine head
08/03/2018 21:50:37

Just with a paintbrush and some dirty diesel I had

I took lots of photographs with the intention of doing a write up, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions and I am well along it smiley

The section I really should put up is the power downfeed which Graetech's version didn't have

08/03/2018 14:02:37

I recently stripped and rebuilt the gearbox on my Warco Super Major version of the RF45 primarily because of leaking oil seals.

The Graetech article was invaluable

Having thoroughly cleaned out alI the gunge I replaced all the bearings and oil seals with good quality branded ones

I found that all the bearings could be removed without the need for heat or excessive force - maybe I was lucky

Unsurprisingly a couple of the bottom bearings were shot due to grit

When re-building I found it quite straightforward to do so from the bottom up, finally dropping on the top cover with gentle tapping

The result is a transformed machine - much quieter and smoother and the sight glass shows the oil to be remaining beautifully clean

What a pity the manufacturer would not spend a few minutes cleaning out the castings in the first place

PS I took the gearbox off for the rebuild. If I have to do it again I don't see any reason not to do the work in situ

Many thanks to you all for your responses

Closer scrutiny of the serial numbers list showed that I was on the wrong model - another senior mement

Will contact 600 group, but would prefer to have a go at making them just for the hell of it smiley

Hello Shaun

I have already had that queried

The serial number is 154393 I got the date from a website list. There is a slight discrepancy between the number on the switch plate and the number on the bed. The last digit on the number on the bed seems to have been overstamped. Happy to have corrections/further information.

I have recently acquired an elderly (1952) Harrison M300 lathe. It is generally in good condition considering its age. However it is missing Pt/No 304.172 collar for TDI and Pt/No 304.170 16T gear (imperial) that engages with the 4TPI leadscrew. Anyone have these lying around, or would someone kindly let me have the dimensions so that I can make them?

Thanks in advance

Exploded view of clutch assembly

Exploded view

"Half moons" in position

Half moons in position

The half moons on my BUD are the same size as the "floor" of the clutch brake halves, i.e. when lying flat inside the brake shoes the flat edge is flush with the brake shoe edge

Here are the dimensions of the ones on my lathe

Half moon dimensions

The inside diameter of the brake shoes when in position in my machine is 1.180" which would be to OD of the half moons (near enough)

Both the straight and curved edges are well radiused as described by Bazyle

Hope this is of assistance
