Thread: NHS Fiasco |

"and about ?9Bn of taxpayers money was wasted. Then it was decided to not pursue the wrongdoers, which many voters still find hard to understand" probably because it was shipped out of reach including it seems barrowloads washed via the IoM. |
Thread: re-use of gas springs |
13/12/2022 12:02:43 |
"How does one discharge the gas in order to cut them up safely, or do you just set the horizontal bandsaw up and run like hell ?" that's what I should have asked directly as the rods look too useful to sit around taking up space. |

the NOx cylinder query prompts me to ask if there is any safe way to re-use the rams (+ tube) from gas springs - I have a few pairs of such, some were 'freebies' unbid-for that were bundled into lots I had an interest in - they are car parts ? for hatchbacks but too big + powerful for any use I can forsee |
Thread: New type postage stamps |
09/12/2022 15:47:23 |
The IoM sells booklets of self adhesive stamps - if you take a letter or parcel to a Post Office they will normally place what appears to be a bar coded stamp but in past when I ask for a selection of the IoM colourful commemorative issues (at one time a good revenue stream) on the envelope knowing the recipient was a family historian buying my cd it was allowed. |

Anonymous communication is hated by authoritarian governments - sounds as tho the UK is applying for membership of this club - maybe the PRC can supply some expertise. |
Thread: Banks |

Bill I have always found Nationwide to be very helpful (or at least the local branch was) - have you tried going in person to a local branch and asking for assistance - some years ago I had to organise a joint account with a friend who having had a stroke was having difficulties - they couldn't have been more helpful. Thread: Wind Turbine |
06/12/2022 09:08:30 |
Michael's visit to the Great Orme was on a flat calm day in the Irish sea (Peel bay was like a mill pond) - two days prior wind had been generating 40% of UK power - all it proves is that alternative sources are needed (on that winter day solar around midday was generating twice the power of wind) it was also a day in which coal powered station was active. |
Thread: Something for 9yr old to make |

A box Kite ? then hope for good flying days |
Thread: What Did you do Today 2022 |
27/11/2022 10:18:39 |
Is there not a friendly scrappie who would take in your rail in part exchange for a bit of plate which would at least be easier to mill - but why such a large bit needed for a V-block as the general problem with small mills is lack of headroom. |
Thread: Rust Protection |
25/11/2022 18:30:02 |
Thinking they might be useful I paid abt ?1.50 for 3 electrical thin flexible heater panels each a double 30 W heating panel designed for snakes and reptiles that need warmth) - they would fit nicely to the rear of a metal splash guard on a lathe - so far I've not needed protection for a cellar workshop so it is an untested idea. |
Thread: Retro-fit speed control to battery grinder? |
19/11/2022 17:05:57 |
grinding off the identification of the controller chip is fairly common in consumer products (the big boys in consumer products have their chips identified with their own private marks) - it makes blatant (aka Chinese) copying a little more difficult tho sometimes with grazing light you may be able to read it tho usually the chip will only be available in batches of 10000's |
Thread: Words and phrases |
15/11/2022 16:20:10 |
I suspect 'Turn on a sixpence' is a repurposed phrase having nothing to do with motion but as in 18th C 6d was the smallest piece of silver it has probably more to do with bribery of voters in the then corrupt parliamentary elections. |
Thread: Another Smart Meter thread. |
12/11/2022 23:47:46 |
GeoThermal would mostly fit though there would need to be be pipework to push the water down to the hot rocks but there are relatively few places where this is economic. |

Putin was at first looked on as one who could bring some stability to the post 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union - also recall Lenin's description of capitalists "they would sell you the rope to hang their grandmother" ie there is a class more interested in the profit to be made than in the social implications of their actions - the same could be said about the West not providing some help to cushion the shock to Russia in 1991, some help was given to those escaping from the collapsed Soviet empire but here there was a more recent history of successful governance between the post WW1 peace and WW2 to fall back on plus enough surviving local social structures to support the newly established government, both sadly missing from Russia itself which had never been westernised - this allowed the Putin regime to become dominant - again look back to the 1930s in Germany. But now this thread is entering very political waters. |
12/11/2022 10:05:37 |
because Germany and much of Europe are deprived of the gas that came from Russia - price shoots up to reflect this shortage - it was a political decision by Germany to accept the risks of becoming a client state in terms of energy to the Russian state - we are all now paying the price. |
Thread: Perfectly ground Twist Drills every time. |
10/11/2022 21:26:21 |
there is the book by J Hugel "Twist Drills - Geometry and Performance" that has some of the maths and illustrations of various sharpening arrangements - was (? is) available via SMEE - I was slightly late in joining last zoom lecture but in the chairman's remarks I understood Prof Hugel had died recently. no there was a spat several years ago and much useful posting was removed by one of the parties - wrecked many threads (one of which I was very interested in as a newbie) - some of it was salvaged by others, some I think landed up in a book and the rest to the electronic version of landfill - the internet has taken over from libraries but the equivalent of book burning just needs someone to throw a wobbly and there isn't even a puff of smoke to show what was once there. Thread: Yet another scam |
29/10/2022 16:42:39 |
it used to be a trick played at various conferences - drop a malware memory stick that appeared to be lost by another visitor - most will plug it in! Edited By Frances IoM on 29/10/2022 16:42:55 |
Thread: Is It The Blue Screen of Death |
25/10/2022 22:49:18 |
John + Dave The solution mentioned in the message seemed to imply that there was a mechanism to get a menu prompt one option of which was to fix the boot system without actually having any thing to download - but I too have never had to fix an Android system though having just bought a Samsung 2nd hand model I might well be required to do so - there are many small repair shops that might well be able to do a no fix no pay repair |
