most I think are because they are http rather than the latest https - for those on landlines it is highly unlikely that the link will be tampered with (ie be insecure) but for those using mobile phones via base stations in cafes etc that will not be the case - Firefox has become much more link security conscious recently

it would have to be a very old microwave oven to have a transformer in it - modern power supplies are much lighter and very much cheaper.

the 110V site transformers are true transformers - the secondary is centre tapped with a connection to earth thus maximum 55V supply which is considered safe.

I have an old PF3600 scanner that produces a 12MB jpeg image with autofocus and tho better than needed for use on a laptop etc is still nowhere as good resolution as the original slides (admittedly taken on a good camera with good lenses) - I bought a couple of cheap scanners but these produce poor quality as well as being poor to focus - you will definitely be disappointed with these.

Tho the slides had been kept in special folders they still needed air brushing before scanning - a relatively slow business as each slide needed to be handle individually - I did 3000 over a period of many evenings (+ two bottled air dusters) but still have probably another 5000 to go.

The other key point is to create a data base as you scan - luckily many of my slides had some title written on the slide frame - otherwise you won't be able to find them again.
If you have access to a good quality scanner these often had an adapter to allow scanning of slides - slower process than a special slide scanner but in past I've had reasonable results from such a scanner.

I have some fishing line - comes in various thicknesses (usually expressed as breaking strength or weight of hoped for catch) - any shop that deals with fishing tackle will stock it

maybe the steel was the same 'metal' used in the set of Poundland allen keys bought out of necessity as no hardware shop was in locality and I needed one of the small ones to remove a grub screw - it twisted like a corkscrew and job had to wait for me to return with a proper set of keys.

my GP surgery won't accept emails - has a very poor web interface and telephone calls take ages to be answered and only after one has listen to (and paid for) a long winded explanation as to how qualified the secretarial staff are in triaging. Personally I write a note and drop it thro the letter box marked specimums.

I would have considered placing lathe and mill on same wall esp if the room length is suitable as it allows easy access to the headstock to allow use of long lengths thru the chuck - they can be set up to 'dangle' over the mill bed - even easier if you build a extra steady that sits on the mill bed - avoids much wastage if you only need short lengths for items.

the tiny screws, two powerful but awkwardly shaped magnets, a couple of small bearings - I believe, but haven't done it myself, that the alloy case can be melted down.
The actual disk platter is extremely accurately flat but never found a use for it - the first generation disc drives used a glass but later ones used metal
The small motor driving the platter can be removed but you need the extra electronics to drive it

Waterstones now charge 10p for a paper bag which seems to either be sheer profiteering or a sign their finances are poor - at one time Waitrose used cloth bags (still have one as spare bag in my car) which last for some time.

I have a print subscription for MEW but after the confusion re the number of issues promised under that subscription I decided to have a standing order with local W H Smith in UK to take ME and hold it until I collect it - that has been erratic with both that and for another weekly magazine I take missing issues etc - my own opinion is that W H Smith don't actually care though they require an upfront deposit to hold magazines.
So far I seem to have all MEWs tho as many have realised the contents seem significantly less than pre covid days and with sometimes poor proof reading leading to missing content.
I don't find reading issues online attractive though it does save considerable space - the surveillance model of today's internet is equally distasteful.

cold white is better I think for workshop use - if you get dimmable LED lighting then you can adjust over a significant range.
My own preference is for LED panels 600x600mm you could get 2 in place of the single tube light; mount in a surface mount tray about half the height of that fitting - the LED driver sits on top of the panel in the tray - make them individually switched

there was a training airfield at Jurby on IoM towards end of ww2 - many polish airmen were taught there - there is also a long line of graves of those who 'failed' the course in the local graveyard at Jurby (so many that the church had special links to RAF.

I'm afraid so much FUD (fear, uncertainty + doubt) has been spread by M/S that many actually buy into it - even our Editor.

Possibly in the distant past it was true that Linux required greater knowledge and of course many with that knowledge moved once they could escape from proprietary packages and lockin but these days most Linux packages work straight out of the box and are even happy to share a machine with M/S (the reverse is however not the case) - I usually recommend Mint as the distribution very suitable for those moving from Windows but recently I've been moving my older machine to MXLinux (base is Debian 10) which has an excellent range of tools carefully chosen from the vast array and eg one being Wine fully integrated into the package - WINE allows easy running of those M/S programs that are 'essential' for the non-Linux users and cause much of the Lockin. I usually suggest they buy a cheap SSD memory eg CEX sell 128GB devices for around ?25 and swop out their hardrive (generally a trivial task) and install MXLinux from DVD or USB stick - many tutorials online.

I presume these scammers are not trying to profit on the sale of a product that is probably unnecessary (I speak as a Linux user) and apparently available elsewhere at lower prices but are possibly attempting to sell malware

since you now have 30 or so surely this is enough to be able to demonstrate your idea (whatever it is) actually works and a saleable device can be produced - personally at this point since it is obvious that your engineering knowledge and tooling is insufficient for a 1-man operation, to take a demo to a trusted agent under a NDA and pay for advice as (a) if there is indeed a market, (b) if so then at what manufacturing price and then (c) get professional advice as to production engineering.

make a simple U-shaped jig out of MDF with a trough with a 45deg angle at both ends with a 90 element at one end with a threaded rod etc to compress all bits lay 2 strips of steel on top of along the top of the U sides so arranged so that the top of steel lowest place to file then use a large file and exercise your arm - if you can case harden the steel strips so much the better

unless the WM180 has changed significantly chucks, faceplates etc are bolted to a flange - just look between the rear of the chuck and the headstock - small fingers are useful here as you will find when you swop chucks.
It runs fine in reverse but at a slower speed set by the electronics - the major problem with the WM180 (apart from lack of a tumbler) is no meat on the cross slide on which to fasten anything.
