Thread: Gerhard's Lady Steph
08/03/2022 11:16:42

Hi Gerhard, it is actually a cast iron weight from, I think I am calling it right, a dumbell. As in weight lifting. Aldi were selling a pack of 4 for a few pounds so I thought they might come in use for flywheels and bought a pack. Because the weight bore was much greater than the flywheel bore in the drawing, I had to make a boss to fit the weight bore so that I could reduce the inner diameter to fit the shaft. I could have removed more spokes but decided to leave it the way it ended up. If need be I could still take out the additional spokes if I wanted to.

Mark / Gerhard, I can't say I enjoyed making the Lady Stephanie Beam Engine. Mine is not quite complete, just the final governor parts to finish it off. For me there were too many tiny parts to make, of which some got lost in my workshop and had to be remade. I plan to make something larger for my next project and also need to spend more time on my Pansy Loco to move it along.

Thread: Concrete Panel Garage/Workshop
04/03/2022 19:31:15

I extended my brick built workshop at the rear of my garage by attaching a prefabricated concrete shed/garage. As they are modular in construction, I further extended it by attaching a lean too onto the side and removed the dividing wall to open it up inside. The company I used was Lidget Compton. (Lidget.Co.UK} I then lined the walls and roof with insulation and attached wood panels over the insulation on the walls.

Repair of truck axle. All wearing sandals and bare footed!!! When I weld with shoes on I still get hot sparks into my shoes. Welding the axle in the lathe is hardly good practice!! How the other half function is amazing but it works. Didn't notice any H & S guys around.

Thread: Plasma cutter at lidl
17/02/2022 15:08:54

Went to Lidl this morning to get a Plasma Cutter. No luck!! First store said they had not received a delivery, so went to a second store and got the same response. Phoned customer service and told they were not aware of any distribution issues. Left my e mail and they will get back to me.

Has anybody managed to get a unit today?

Question, can you TIG / MIG Weld with a plasma cutter if the power is turned down?? Assuming you can get round the gas supply issues. I know that you can get plasma welders but not sure of the differences.

Thread: Doncaster Model Railway Show.
12/02/2022 18:43:44

Went along to the model railway show at Doncaster Racecourse today. Long que to get in, even with advance ticket. Mostly N, OO and 0 gauge and not really my cup of tea but my friend is into 00 gauge and as we live in Doncaster I went along with him. I was surprised how busy it was. By lunch time it was packed. Almost no signs of Covid restrictions. Only a few people wearing masks and most not, that was it. At least it got me out of the house for a few hours. Made me question why the Model Engineering Exhibition has been cancelled for this year?

Thread: Hello from barnsley, south yorkshire
11/02/2022 20:38:31

Hi Andrew, welcome to the forum. Just down the road from you in Doncaster. Have been meaning to go up to Wortley to check them out, if you go before I do give us an update. I am a member of Rotherham (RDMES) and also go to the open days at Sheffield and Chesterfield clubs. Both worth a visit, very well run and good clubs. If I can be of any assistance let me know. I often go up to Watts auction house in Barnsley for tools and equipment in their auctions.

Thread: Home made lathe, only hand & power tools used.

Yes impressive but how accurate is it? The amount of welding will cause a lot of distortion. It can be minimised by not welding too much in one area and by balancing out the locations for welding but you can't eliminate all of the distortion. Also I did not see any calibrated dials on any of the traverse wheels. Not much good if you can't machine accurately. But I do concede the guy is a very competent fabricator.

Mike, you can get the same clamps at Machine Mart and a lot cheaper than Axminster.

Thread: DTI Spares / Repairs
21/01/2022 16:48:17

Bo'sun thanks for your advice. I contacted Bowers and they informed me they don't have spares. However he said that they had a unit returned faulty and he will send it out to me FOC.

Great company and customer service.

Thanks Bo'sun. I did not know that. I thought M & W went out of business years ago. I will try Bowers.

Thanks,

Alan.

Hi can anybody help me and tell me where I can get spares for a Moore & Wright DTI. The small plastic lever on the side of mine has broken. I recall reading an article some months ago (I think it was on this forum) of a company who carries out repairs. I have searched the forum and read quite a few posts regarding DTI's but can't find anything. I will try searching the internet next but as a last resort I will try and make a replacement.

Thread: Chester Craftsman or Crusader?
06/01/2022 20:48:19

Hi Colin, I have a Chester DB11 Lathe and very happy with it. Does everything I want it to do. As for customer service I have never really had a bad experience. I also have a Chester Super Lux Mill, a Chester Champion 20VS Mill and a Chester multi former. So I am a little biased but happy all the same.
