Thread: Tuscan motor .55kw induction motor
15/04/2017 10:17:22
I think an hour's running sounds about right, a petrol pump is not designed to run continuously although if that was exceeded and caused the motor to overheat and fail it would not cause a major problem as the motor is designed as a flameproof unit.

All my mics look like that!
Always thought it was correct.

Thread: Are we the last generation.?
08/03/2017 08:57:03
My son (36) is like myself, I restored a beautiful M type Drummond for him which he loves - uses it more than I use my Myford! But I know for a fact he will be passing his skills to his offspring.
I do think, overall that our breed are on the decline though.

Thread: Washing Work Clothes

I have all my workshop/garage gear washed on a 'grot wash'
Never comes up spotless but then it wouldn't look right if it did!

Thread: Grinding wheel material
16/02/2017 22:35:36
Thanks for the info, most useful!
Occasionally I do put on my green grit wheel to have a session of sharpening masonry drills.
I have only ever experienced carborundum wheels and the one I have on now seems quite soft so requires dressing to clean it up and as a consequence of this the diameter reduces, which makes it worse!

I need to replace the wheels on my double ended grinder and was curious to know if aluminium oxide wheels would be better than the carborundum ones I have been using.
M/C is used for general tool grinding of hss, carbon steel and drills etc (not carbide)

Don't know why it's sold in tins, I always pour it into a plastic container - once bitten!

Likewise, I have a small sheet of rubber trapped under a piece of ally. If I am working the other side of the saddle I will have a piece of newspaper (screw it up and throw away regularly)
Keep it clean and oil it regularly!

I used to deal with an old time toolmaker who used something like you describe, don't know what it was called but it was basically a clear plastic block with a hole in it. Across the underneath face it had two lines engraved/scribed, these lines were lined up vidually on your marked out work and a close fitting centre punch dropped into the hole and tapped.
This guy could work to close tolerances using it!

Thread: Myford 'endorsed' oils and oil gun?
30/01/2017 10:41:55
All the oilers on my Myford are flat topped, and the gun I use most is made by Tecalemit GB2787 (and it's diecast not plastic!) It's classed as a grease gun but I have only ever used it with oil and find it really works well and hasn't leaked. Doesn't hold a lot so will require more frequent filling. Must be similar ones about got mine new/boxed at a boot sale!
I tend to be a bit fastidious about cleanliness and will fully clean the lathe down and oil up after each session! but obviously if the machine has been neglected in the past no amount of oil will restore it.

I use nuto for my ml7 spindle and 20/50 engine oil for all the sliding surfaces.
I have a large rubber cover fitted to the saddle keeping swarf off the front end and when working the other side of the saddle I usually place sections of newspaper held with a magnet if required over the exposed bed.
Change it as required.
I use a couple of oil guns, a plastic one with quite a small diameter end and one that was supplied with my Morris Minor.
Both work well, I don't think you need to spend ?70!
Keep it clean and keep it oiled, mine still produces very accurate results, and it's 60 years old!

Thread: MIG to TIG
30/01/2017 00:11:44
Thanks for all your inputs, I (obviously wrongly)! thought I could experiment with this method on the cheap using my existing MIG as the main cost item hoping to add a few periferal bits and be having a go.

Thread: Drummond Round bed lathe
29/01/2017 17:34:10
I used to visit my grandparents with mum and dad in the 60's and in their longer/diner behind a curtain was granddad's lovely round bed complete and on its stand.
Don't know what happened to it.

Thread: MIG to TIG
29/01/2017 13:10:14
This sounds like I shouldn't bother!
Looked at the r-tech range but that's not my idea of not much money!!
Might be worth getting a cheap stick welder for the constant current supply?

Alan
28/01/2017 22:43:38
I occasionally use my Clarke Turbo 130 MIG welder which over the years has done a good job, if there is a problem it is usually operator error!
Toying with the idea of a TIG welder and have found a few articles regarding using the MIG converted ie, no wire , tip converted to hold the tungsten electrode and using an appropriate gas, argon and reversing current.
Any of you guys had a dabble with a conversion, and how successful was it!

Thread: Best Dremel type machine?
26/01/2017 10:42:05
I bought a Dremel with the flexibility drive from a boot sale (?5) looks new. Never really wanted one but since I have had it it has been so useful!
Dremel, highly recommended!
