Thread: a cautionary tale

If you have a 30's house and still use part of the old steel pipe system near the meter it may still have the old town gas water drain, which can pin hole.

All your appliances should have a gas tap so you can isolate them one at a time from your piping.

Doing much else involves breaking the rules.

I wonder what it's like to shower under a 10 bar pump.

Just because it says Caravan Camping Boat doesn't mean it's really suitable.

"When you do, the line is held open, so he can send you the recording of a dial tone, then ringing, and then he's back. Works because most people don't know how the phone system works, have hazy notions of banking methods in general, and probably no experience of bank security processes. Wait 10 minutes and then call someone else before dialling"

Dave, I stand to be corrected because I have been out of the telecoms industry for a few years now, but it is my recollection that forward call holding, which was a throwback to the old electro-mechanical exchanges, was eliminated several years ago. I think I know this because, although I had taken a voluntary redundancy from my employer of 38 years, I was requested to assist with the loading of a new build of software on to the exchanges of some OLO's (other licensed operators). I can't comment on the BT build uplift because I was not involved with that program. Although I was not privy to all the details of the uplift, it was my understanding that one of the issues the new build dealt with was that of the bank scam that relied, as you rightly point out, the line being held open by the caller for fake dial tone to be sent to the called party. I don't think this was ever any longer than 20 seconds in the case of System X switches but in any event it was eliminated around 6 or 7 years ago. As I say, I do stand to be corrected on this if someone is still in the industry and if the old narrow-band digital switches even exist anymore.

It does indeed date back to the days of clockwork, however you could drop out the receiving end AC9 relay set on trunk calls if you could whistle exactly 2280hz

Credit card acceptance fees are not allowed in the UK. However over here you would have been hit with $120 worth of the dreaded VAT.

And we all know America doesn't have State sales taxes smiley

What about the other end of the motor ?

There's a type of older motor that uses brushes to start which can be reversed by rotating the brush carrier, no cap involved. So if they come loose........

Thread: Parting tool problem

I thought the standard answer to a post with the words 'parting' and 'problem' in it was to fit a rear upside down tool post, especially with all those empty T slots.

Are you using the reverser switch for the on/off as well?

It's very easy to arc the contacts if you do, which deposits metal nearby and gives you a earth leakage issue.

Thread: Gear cutters

20dp 20pa gears are used on Minnie, which is a 1" to the foot model, now they don't have to be 20pa, the pa was chosen due to the availability of gears off the shelf. It would however look wrong if 16dp had been used.

Don't forget that what ever your chosen dividing system is there will be various numbers of teeth which cannot be derived. There are tables on the web that show the gaps check with more than one table and dry run the teeth with a felt tip before cutting to spot any errors. It's tedious and slow, but avoids later disappointment.

If a model needs a 2:1 ratio for timing etc you can't change the ratio, if it's to a winding drum or wheels etc then it doesn't really matter and 2 and bit :1 will be OK.

I can't see anything wrong with running dishwasher /washing machine/tumble drier in the eay hours, just needs some planning. At the moment we pay wind power men not to produce when supply exceeds demand. Seems like a very sensible suggestion, no one is saying you can't use power at peak times if you're prepared to pay, and if demand does exceed supply I'd rather they switched off my washing machine than the lights.

Should I open a book on how long it takes for this to descend to a climate denier rant.

Your washing machine will go off at the same time as your lights.

i deny there's a climate,

Since the spate of white goods fires a while back we don't run them unattended by a conscious human nose.

A QCTP is good for HSS, otherwise a matched set of insert holders give only one shim to make for all three in the existing 4 way. The speed advantage is therefore irrelevant and the height adjustment for HSS is the only thing left worth having.

Thankyou Howard smiley

Considering we recently (before our dry spell) had someone who had a leaking and therefore wet shed roof who reading between the lines thought putting new felt over a wet roof would be OK. and fix his rust problem. The article was probably timely given the damage that will go un-noticed over the coming cold months.

Does anyone have any interest in the contents of the attached photo and perhaps hazard a guess as to the purpose of them?

From time to time over the years I have sold machines to upgrade by little workshop. I have placed ad,s on various forums with little response. I have sold on eBay with buyers coming some distance to collect and both of us happy with the price paid and given. However of late I tried to sale a very nice cnc router which was too big and taking up too much space for the use I was getting out of it. Placed it on Facebook market place, and had a dealer come round who said he would buy it for the asking price but he could not collect until the following week. In that week I turned down other interested people. And yes you knew this was coming, the dealer did not turn up. However out of the blue another chap turned up and offered half the asking price and could take it away same day. I put it on eBay, and it’s now in Burma. Dealers on the whole are robbers. The only think in their ability to transport the machines. When I am past it, I will sale the whole lot on eBay.

The dealer sent his mate the first time, it's a known trick car dealers play on private sales.

Fractionally off topic, but still stupid pricing this wonderful ahem 'Body' has been on for that price for at least 2 years or more. Being a private listing you can't view the revisions to see the original start date.

You have this sold Boxford with noticeable bed wear near the serial number, I think the £90 delivery clinches deals like this, few seem to be prepared to do local pickup.

There's a state of mind out there that says, more expensive so must be worth it otherwise some of the inflated prices would not the paid

My GP doesn't do them. But the Pharmacy next door does, usually without booking. They also take Blood samples and Blood pressure tests. Is this the privatisation of the NHS creeping in ?

yes and no wink

My GP is now a multiple partnership of 5 practises, the phone system is a joke and GP's were effectively privatised when they were given their own budgets to spend on treatment.

We now have several pay for treatment GP's poping up in high St retail units. These Dr must have left proper practises to set up private thus creating their own 'shortage' and desperate customers.

Nice.

The Great was put into Great Britain when we were the biggest pollutant on the planet, the Black Country was proudly very black, as was the Thames for a different reason, we sent children down mines and up chimneys.

They will only follow if the money does just like they always have.
