Thread: Coke for Brazing |

It's pointless, putting vermiculite brick insulation in close around the part will result in far more heat going in than using coke, (unless you basically create a blacksmith's hearth, at which point, you don't really need the torch).
Sorry Jelly I don't get that, vermiculite bricks insulate as good as Rockwool, unlike old fashioned fire bricks or night storage heater bricks that soak up heat like a sponge. cheapest bought on Ebay in a bulk lot of 20 you can make a large hearth to reflect the heat back into the job, with self tappers and kitchen worktop brackets to hold it together. |

I would use this stuff having seen the price of a 3M tube or chat up a windscreen repair guy, after de rusting and Galv (zinc) spraying the offending channel. |

That solid wire should not go to a pug obviously. The extra wires are for the zero volt release. Earth wire will terminate in the start stop button box. |

If all you want to do is create non scale sketches there is a very simple package within MS Word if you already have it. You start it by creating a text box. Dimensions in text boxes, arrows to point with, you can draw a sleeve by grouping two boxes together and two circles for the 2 required views. Just drag stuff to proportion. VAT was payable on imports back in the 70's. They taxed you on the value (import duty) then they put VAT on top |
Thread: Freezing...... |
13/12/2022 11:30:30 |
Talking of freezing it's been going on long enough to begin affecting your central heating boiler. So if yours has a condensate drain with a horizontal exposed run they can fully freeze up in time, then you get an icicle form at the air gap if there is one. If it ices enough to fully block the pipe the boiler will shut down until the blockage is cleared. |

The way domestic prices are going it won't be long before large numbers of people start using these solutions to save money Edited By Ady1 on 11/12/2022 01:43:00 People have got a much better method over here by way of ticktoc. It involves two terracotta flower pots, one being a size smaller than the other, + one terracotta tray the same size as the top of the biggest pot, a piece of threaded rod and a dozen tea lights. Bolt it all together without any washers cos they are 50p each and you get what looks a bit like a terracotta tree rocket powered by burning tea lights. The tray gets hot, the pots are heavy and lean just a little, the tray cracks , everything falls over, the tea lights spill wax, which goes up all in one go, and the Brigade gets a call out to free entertainment from yet another Darwin attempt to cheaply (£20 worth of materials + all the redecoration costs) heat a room. |

As it hums, twisting the chuck by hand might start it. If so the capacitor hiding under the motor plate sticker is usually dead. |

Rick Moore kindly scanned his copy of the manual and sent it to me. Unfortunately, it does not have a detailed breakdown of the machine, there must have been an additional 'parts' manual too. I am still happy that Rick was kind enough to scan his manual and send it on. Elliott Victoria TV2 Milling Machine Operator Manual. Edited By Jan Raap on 18/11/2022 22:08:19 That is pretty much all you ever get with any industrial machine. Elliotts would have such a document to build the machine, but it wouldn't leave the works. |
Thread: Privacy Glass in cars |

From the 'benefit' of driving an SUV / estate with the offending windows. You can see following traffic clearly when the outside is brighter than the inside. People walking passed it when parked can't see what goodies you have in the back. The down side is reversing in a very dark place is nearly impossible without a camera and only the door mirrors will find cyclists riding with no lights. On balance privacy glass is a pain I could live without.. |
Thread: Workshop warming |

Mick You asked what about infra red. Well that's what I use in a 5.5m x 2.5m workshop and I think it's great. As you say it heats you up and not all the air. It's a 2kw 3 bar and it goes on 3 bars when I first go in and in no time at all I am turning it down to one bar. I did use fan heaters from screwfix but found these to be pretty useless. They did warm the workshop up but very slowly and I was normally only getting warm when it was time to go in. I used to have it slotted onto screws on the wall so I could take it down to either end depending on what I was doing but have since just left it up one end. It was about 40 quid and is shaped like a rugby ball from heatlab off amazon. My workshop is also insulated with celotex.
Yep, fan heaters are both useless and expensive to run. |

In our workshop the Gaffer allows us to all huddle around a candle. If the workshop temperature drops below -10 he will even allow us to light it. Must have been my mother, she used to switch the bar fire glow blubs on and claim she felt warmer. |
Thread: Stopping everything from rusting. |

All I can say is in an integral garage where rusting is not an issue, painted 3 draw cabinets rust where they touch the bare 1980's concrete. A piece of old carpet stops it. |
Thread: How long should I keep my recently vapour blasted steel engine components before getting a primer coat down |
05/12/2022 23:47:09 |
Posted by Mike Poole on 05/12/2022 21:24:19:
A sudden change of weather from cold to warm and wet will see condensation wreak havoc on bare steel. Handling with bare hands soon puts rusty fingerprints on blasted clean steel. A coat of primer will offer some protection but even primed jobs seem to succumb eventually. If you don’t mind having to thoroughly degrease the jobs then a protective oil coating could be used until a full paint system can be applied. Mike Primer is by it's nature porous so that the topcoat bonds properly, so the water can get through it. Any soldering work done near the bare steel will also cause rust. |

If you block the ventilation gaps with spray foam the roof will run with condensation. If the slab extends outside the walls the rain will come under the walls. 8 x 4 sheets of foam are not expensive, Wikes sell it for £11 a sheet 25mm thick, sealing the roof off with it will not be pointless. However, most of the damp comes from the floor so applying a big sheet of membrane and then screeding over it will be needed. |

The trouble with a BS0 is that the mounting length is more than you think. I can use mine to make a 6" bull gear on a Centec 2A directly in the 4" chuck, but ran out of table trying to cut a 3/4" gear. That said I didn't have the drive dog. |
