With only a live, neutral and earth on a single phase cable why would a manufacturer put five or six terminals on a motor? Just asking!
So that the single phase motor can be reversed if required. There is a bit more to it than with a 3 phase motor.

. I would say that the brushes have gone south. (quite common on some imported DC motors) Don't keep trying to run the rascal until they are replaced.

... I'm sure you will appreciate why I am trying to find a compact lathe with D1-3 fitting; so that I can use mine in the very small space that I have available. MichaelG.
You have.! Just give it to me in exchange for a bag of Jelly Babies. Tempted ain't ya.?

. I know the Harrison M250 has a D1-3 headstock and this range of Boxfords does **LINK** I suppose it depends upon your definition of 'compact'.? I have one of those Boxfords which for model engineering could not be considered compact. But a friend of mine who runs a machine shop considers it to be a baby lathe.

. I have one of these **LINK** from RDG on my Boxford. It's OK but they don't always have the extra tool holders in stock. I have wanted to buy some extras for about 3 months from them. Having said that this week they are now again in stock.!

. Good and interesting replies. Thanks. The side discussion about the collets is a worthy one and I can understand the benifits of such a system and why it should be considered when purchasing a new chuck. I should however have made my requirements a little clearer in my OP (which also ties in with a recent thread I made about avoiding marks on work) I will also need to re-hold part finished items that would not be possible in a collet chuck such as things in the image below. A collet chuck at some point will be on my 'new toy' list though.

The Burnered MultiSize is a lovely system, especially in D1-3 fitting.
MichaelG.
I would imagine it is. Yes John, I think the smallest size possible for a D1-3 backplate is 100mm or the mounting spigots would end up in 'mid-air'. I don't have a problem with 10mm around the back of the chuck protruding so long as it's finished smooth and rounded edges to prevent my knuckles becoming 'customised'
Cheers all, Nick |

As you get older smaller and lighter become desirable attributes.
I am only 52.!!!!! .............. That's classed as a mere 'wippersnapper' in the world of model engineering. Ain't it.?????????
