As the title suggests I need some advice on a QCTP for my CUD. It's a 5" model, don't really know if that makes a difference, but there seems to be a lot of choice. I have looked at posts from Chronos, Chester and RDG. which type will give the most rigid setup?

.

I have one of these **LINK** from RDG on my Boxford.

It's OK but they don't always have the extra tool holders in stock. I have wanted to buy some extras for about 3 months from them.

Having said that this week they are now again in stock.!

Regards, Nick

I have two Aloris/PhaseII type AXA size on a 4-1/2" Model "A" Boxford one back and one front and make a lot of my own holders which are not too hard to manufacture unlike the Dickson type which are a little too intricate.

Here is a UK supplier Arceurotrade

The Dickson type tool post is also available here **LINK**

My Boxford has an original Boxford Dickson tool post and I have used holders purchased off fleabay with out any issues.

Thanks for the speedy replies chaps.

I have just been out and measured my current tool post, it is 52mm high and has a 1/2" bolt hole.

I assume although sold as Boxford fitting tool posts, there may be a little work to get them fitted?

Of course my tool post may not be original. It does seem strange that the bolt being sold as a direct replacement by chronos is only 15mm dia and the tool posts seem to have 17mm holes.

Mine is a stepped bolt with an od of 5/8" which is what Chronos offer on their tool post a 15mm bolt will be a rattling fit.

The only machining required to fit an AXA size QCTP is to machine a step into the supplied separate bolt base to suit your topslide slot.

This particular pic is of a "Craftsman" lathe but shows the operation required.

Paul,

Thats a really nice base for your rear Toolpost might make a good submission as an MEW article?

Cheers

Hi Dull,

This might be of interest:

I'm not convinced the bracing bars are necessary.

I like the look of the AXA/100 post, but not sure if this will fit my 5" lathe or if I need the BXA/200.

I have measured from the top surface of my top slide to centre height as 24.5mm, I don't know how this compares with the 4 1/2" models.

Would I get a 1/2" tool on centre with an AXA post? I don't use or plan to use anything bigger than 1/2"HSS tooling.

Just had another look at the dimensions listed for the AXA/100, If I'm right I would need to use 12mm tooling, to get on centre height. Does this sound right? I assume the tool holders sit flat on the top slide when in position.

I use up to 16mm tooling in the holders I have for my 4-1/2" Model "A".

Some of my holders are genuine Aloris/PhaseII and natively allow 16mm tooling, all my homemade one's are 16mm the far eastern imports have around a 13mm slot in them.

Have a look at the Aloris Catalogue for some more sizes

It's easy to vary the height of the holder by it's adjustable knurled ring and locknut for the amount of travel allowed by the toolpost block height it doesnt just sit at the bottom.

I have just ordered a QCTP from Chronos. I finally decided on the Dickson type, hopefully giving me slightly more tool choice (up to 16mm) and that extra bit of adjustment to get tooling on centre.

I have gone for the one Bob Brown 1 recommended. Many thanks.

John
