Thread: Searching for a good quality, metric-only, 300mm steel ruler

You're unlikely to find a rule with a non slip back, maybe a straight edge, because these are used more for scoring lines, not saying they don't exist, just might be easier to buy a straight edge, and a rule separately.

I have one, just not sure where I got it, and it's metric/imperial.

Thread: Damp shed: what’s the best way to add ventilation?
19/03/2022 10:15:09

Interesting to read how damp air actually rises. The condensation problem on my metal roof was terrible, even with a dehumidifier. I used the metallic bubble film. It has a reputation for not being hugely effective compared to other insulation, but I wanted something that wouldn't lose me headroom and could go between beams and the roof as much as possible. It's been really effective, I used a version with self-adhesive strips on it, but ended up using a roll and a half of double-sided tape as well for about 20m^2.

I'm hoping it will help keep things cool in summer as well.

The musical instrument comes from the Arabic 'al 0ud'.

We still call makers of plucked instruments 'luthiers'.

Hi folks, no drama, Ketan had a word with MTM's IT department, as he couldn't reach me (I have now switched off my "I've got covid and feel poorly, let me be" auto responder).

Posted by Pete. on 13/03/2022 02:14:02:

The original point of this thread was is it distasteful, well maybe, but remember there are some environmentalists who may think your steam model trains are distasteful, they may come for your hobby in the near future.

And some who don't.

Thread: How Many People Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb on the Forum?
12/03/2022 15:32:53

My dad's shop (into the early 80s) had a very large light bulb in one of the junk rooms upstairs. Said bulb had a very large black, carbon, filament. It still worked, but didn't get used much.

I have some Ediswan transistors somewhere. testament to the two men's cooperation.

LBSC was never like that.

I'm not sure I can agree with that. He was pretty acerbic about anything or anyone who was at variance with how he thought things should be done!

Thread: Internet access alternatives
11/03/2022 19:10:38

Just put 'speed test' into google, and it will offer a very basic, reliable one without ads etc.

About 108/8 today.

Compares with the 2.5/0.7 I had when in the Midlands... that made uploading photos a for MEW fun each month.

Thread: Is this distasteful
11/03/2022 12:25:17

Ok folks, as I have Covid I'm not feeling 100% and not keeping a close eye on things. Plus, I still have a fair bit of brain fog, so more time spent correcting the typos here than typing it out!

Some people will always find anything gun related offensive. I am distressed by the situation in Ukraine, but I don't feel a need to get rid of my model tanks and military aircraft. Factual discussion of what was an unknown object isn't glorifying war, but i can understand why some may no wish to read about it at the moment - so if you don't, don't.

The rules here are fairly broad and applied with sensible discretion.

In general, it is if discussion becomes offensive, ill-tempered or discriminatory that we act.

I think most of us are long enough in the tooth to judge what is genuinely going too far. Otherwise, make more use of the ignore button or don't visit topics you would rather not read.

This forum is more conservative than some I use, and less so than others. It is probably the one where people get most vocal about things going away from the core purpose.

I think this is ironic as so many of our users don't use much or any other social media so this website is useful for them to have wider, informal discussions with other people.

Especially with the isolation that's resulted from the pandemic, this forum has been important to a lot of people for social interaction in a way that was never originally intended. This is a very good thing, and that's fundamentally why things like tomato seeds are OK to discuss.

Finally, yes, that's why we have the tea room topic, anyone wanting just to talk engineering has an easy way to avoid such discussion if they wish to. No one is being forced to read anything.

It's like a newspaper, if you don't like football, ignore the back page, don't have a row with the newsagent!

Thread: Covid
10/03/2022 14:25:14

I case anyone is waiting for me to answer emails etc. ... I've finally caught the covid bullet on tuesday. Played a gig, my brother came along and tested positive the day after and passed it on to a couple of other people. Of course none of us will appear in any stats now 😁

Now I've got it, I'm convinced I had it in March 2020, symptoms very similar. Not severe, although I feel like I've been gargling razor blades.

Main concern is keeping well away from my dad who has COPD.

Thread: Spindle Play in Sieg SC4 Lathe
10/03/2022 14:20:14

I agree with suggestions the problem may be elsewhere, but even 0.2mm play is excessive for the SC4. You should be able to remove this completely by adjusting the spindle bearing preload. As mentioned above, warm the lathe up first.

Avoid excessive preload by monitoring bearing temperature.

Lots of good advice/guidance on other threads, mostly from Ketan @ Arc.

Thread: Micrometers

I have some with 'blue plastic bits' on, but I think they came from Chester or Chronos?

They work perfectly well but the slots on the battery caps have got a bit chewed up over the years.

Candidates for 3D printed replacements.

Thread: Shed insulation

25mm polystyrene works very well. Going thicker is obviously better but uses up a surprising amount of space for a relatively modest gain.

You need three 1.5 batteries to light a white LED.

That may depend on the particular white LED. I routinely test them with a 3 volt lithium coin cell, and I have a string of battery operated white LEDs (from Ikea) which run off 3 volts.

George

When fresh, these are usually 3.7 volts, which is enough. 2 AAs usually isn't quite enough.

Thread: Diminishing chocolate bar
04/03/2022 20:09:13

I see that a post sneaked past our normally ever-dilligent moderators

I'm a huge lover of kefir (I know many people hate it). I used to buy it in 1L cartons for about £1.50.

These gradually moved to the 'ethinic (Polish) foods' section, hidden away as smaller 'boutique' versions arrived.

Eventually the proper Polish stuff disappeared, and even plain kefir is only available for about £1.50 for 200ml in a plastic bottle.

Tip 1 - take a small amount, add it to 4 pints of full cream milk, leave at room temperature for 4-5 days.

Tip 2 - don't use semi-skimmed milk by mistake, it ferments, but it is not the same.

Get an AAA or AA battery and briefly touch the LED ring leads onto the battery, red one end, white on the other.

Whichever way round the LED lights, the lead on the top of the battery is the positive, the lead on the flat bottom of the battery the negative.

With a 1.5V AA/AAA battery, you will not do any harm connecting it the wrong way round for a few seconds.

You need three 1.5 batteries to light a white LED.
