Thread: How to take out subscriptions online to MEW or ME |
11/01/2023 19:46:12 |
Now and then, forum users get in touch because they have had trouble finding the right place to order a subscription. I can';t have potential new subscribers struggling! Click 'subscribe' on the black bar above this message, or open this link in a new window: www.model-engineer.co.uk/subscribe/ Choose MEW Subscriptions, or ME subscriptions. On the screen that now opens, choose a tab from PRINT, DIGITAL or PRINT + DIGITAL Then select UK, Europe or Rest of world under "select delivery region". New subscribers can then add this to their basket and check out. Existing subscribers can select 'renew'. If you have problems with this, email [email protected].
I hope that helps

Thread: How to set up a 3 phase inverter & motor for a beginner |
10/01/2023 00:32:23 |
Steve, I'm not sure sarcasm is the most effective way of avoiding argument.
There's no issue about discussing 3 phase on the forum. My own article:: But obviously, people should only work with mains voltages if they are competent to do so. One area that will always be one of contention is proper shielding for RFI - not helped by some manufacturer's guidance being completely contradictory to that of other manufacturers. Neil |

Thread: What has model/hobby engineering taught you? (other than the obvious of how to make stuff) |

I have learnt that, if you are patient and careful, willing to take advice and to do things again if they go wrong, you can achieve things way beyond what you thought you were capable of. Neil |

Oh dear this all seems to be getting a bit overheated (sic). Perhaps everyone could calm down a bit, before we have to lock the thread? Neil |

1/8" works well for me too. One piece 6" long can make a dozen tools. Neil |
Thread: Magazine photo placement. |

It's very difficult to get this right. Unfortunately, photos rarely fall evenly through an article, and even if they do sometimes, there are other limitations due to the need to crop or resize. We try hard to keep all the photos in the same issue as the text but failed to do this on one article in the last issue, which is rare but was frustrating. At least we try very hard to avoid orphaning the last few paragraphs as Jason describes (this was more common in US publications in the past) and has become easier to do now we can resize things relatively easily. As John says, drop me an email if you'd like to try your hand at an article. New authors are always welcome, and I suggest starting with something relatively short. Thanks, Neil |

Dashing off for my B12 jab now … back later Lucky you ... arm or stomach? . Top of left arm … thankfully My ‘Tigger Bounce’ should be restored for a while … next one is scheduled for the Ides of March [by which time, I will likely be fading again] Meanwhile: The magnets have not yet arrived. MichaelG. They do marvels for my dad. He missed them for over two years due to covid restrictions, but when he finally got a 'top up course' it worked wonders. Thread: Merry Christmas Everyone! |
22/12/2022 11:30:44 |
May I take this opportunity to wish you and all forum members, subscribers and contributors as well as your families and friends the very best for a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Thanks to all of you for supporting the forum and the magazines. I hope you have enjoyed what we have been able to share over the past year and look forward to Also, a thank you to moderators Jason, Dave and Mike for their (mostly) invisible work in keeping the forum free of clutter. My little 'Christmas Card' may seem cheeky, but what could be a better symbol of hope for the future than Shackleton's Endurance? The very best to you all! |
Thread: My (little) bit for the planet.. |

Awesome! Are you not allowed to sell surplus energy to neighbours? You may find some UK figures interesting. Here we generated 4.6% of our power by solar over the last year, but being winter only 1.1% over the past week. For wind power the figures are roughly 32% and 28% respectively. There is some argument about where, but this is going to be a huge part our power mix in the future. Coal is a third of solar over the year, but gas still makes up over 40%. Nuclear is about 17%; most people have accepted it has an important role as a lower carbon way of balancing the base load. Finally, here in Wales we are looking to see if there's a way to harness rain power Neil Edit... over the last 24 hours over 48% of UK power was from wind generation. Perhaps their understanding of the words are: Pot; - Referring to shape of the base material. Potted: - Being contained within an enclosure or part enclosure. This seems logical to me but still could cause confusion if read in isolation Martin No... pot magnets are the ones used for storing saucepans... |

Looks like it could be adapted as a tool and cutter grinder with a little work. It's a fascinating industry, bracelet making and bangle faceting. Many interesting videos on YouTube. This one shows a few similar, but more primitive, machines in use toward the end. some of the machining processes and set ups if you search YouTube for bangle faceting etc are very ingenious and remind me of some of the ornamental turning machines of the 19th century. Edited By Hopper on 11/12/2022 12:11:05 Presumably that workshop is in Bangledesh? |
Thread: Banks |

I heard a report on R4 last night about 'banking hubs' being set up in towns that lose their last 'real bank'. These will have shared staff for half a dozen or so major banks, funded in proportion to how many customers they have locally, and use the Post Office system for clearing. Neil |
