Sadly, a lot of folk have no technical knowledge or appreciation of basic physics, or how things work generally. But you can't blame people for grasping at such things when fuel prices are so high and the energy suppliers are making BILLIONS in profits. The price of fuel in Saudi Arabia is, or was, a few cents per litre, so why is our own North sea oil so expensive to us? . Edited By John Doe 2 on 24/11/2022 11:28:02 Tax..... ? |
Thread: Centre finder |

David, I like your centre finder, I never got to make as anything as useful as that during my first year apprenticeship ....last century !!!! I would like to make one of those... That device is exactly the sort of project, in my view, that newcomers to our "hobby" could make as it would be useful, quick to make, very cheap to build and a good introduction to metal bashing. Wow £110 ? When I read that I thought it was a typo! At least it's gone to a good home Mark. I would love one of those, but normally they are 10 times what you paid!! Enjoy the new addition Regards Derek |
Thread: JDW Grasshopper engine |

I can imagine the frustration and disappointment if a beginner tackles a model engine that appears to look good on a drawing but becomes impossible to run when built. I realise there will always be the odd drawing error on a published design but I would hope that any designer would have actually built the thing first before publishing his/her design... What about one of the many second hand ones that are around ?, try on line auctions etc. Some of these were made in the 1920's so getting on to be 100 years old now. Regards Derek |
Thread: Model Engineers' Day at the Forncett Steam Museum |

I also live near Cambridge and have never been to this museum. Apart from the mention on this website I had never heard of the place. I must make an effort to make the short trip and visit it. Regards to all Derek |

Today I finished my Gibraltar Tool Post to the design of the late, great "Tubal Cain". Regards to all Derek |

Yesterday I finished making all the ball handles for the Quorn Tool and Cutter grinder I am building ! Regards to all Derek |
Thread: Reader Participation |

I totally understand there are many who just want to get on a build an engine. But I wonder sometimes how many new people taking up our "hobby" with no experience in metal bashing actually realise what it takes to finish even a small project? There must be hundreds of unfinished projects gathering dust where the budding but inexperienced model engineer has bitten off more than they could chew. I think making simple tools that will be used regularly such as a gauge to set the height of a lathe tool for example, can be completed fairly quickly without having to invest in expensive tooling. This gives the inexperienced person valuable skills, inexpensive to make and gives the opportunity for them to assess is model engineering for them? I am fortunate to be apprenticeship trained and having several decades of experience but when I am in the middle of a build, i dont decry the need to stop the project to make a special clamp for example. I would sooner do this than buy ready made tooling that may need to be modified anyway. For example, I am 2/3 the way through building a Quorn, i have had to stop the build to make all those ball handles. The balls needed to be created by a tool that i made to a published design in the ME many years ago... Regards Derek |
Thread: Myford hand wheel dial |

Hi Martin, I did the GHT modification to my non powered crosslide on my super 7 and it works very well, highly recommended!! I haven't done the topslide modification as you have done - that's on my list! How did the conversion go?, I see that Hemingway offer a kit of bits for this. Regards Derek |
Thread: Wheel and Pinion Depthing |

By the look of those photos the wheel tooth form is all wrong for a clock A good reference book is Michael Wild clock wheel and pinion cutting, it's expensive but the definitive book on the theory and practice of cutting wheels and opinions for clocks. Good photos though ! Regards Derek |

As mentioned before, if the wind stops blowing or its night time not much power if anything, is generated by these green systems of power generation. The river Severn has the second highest tidal range from low to high tide in the world. It happens twice every 24 hours regardless of the weather, we really should be looking at this more seriously now thanks to Putin. |

As for sourcing fuel from non despotic and non-lying regimes it seems that the despotic and lying regimes are the ones that have the majority of easy accessible fossil fuel! Regards Derek How dare you refer to the SNP in such terms…………moderator !! Hahaha very good - |
24/08/2022 20:42:19 |
Blow lamp I agree with you with the systemic push away from fossil fuels is definitely going to have serious consequences. Sometimes in a crisis technology finds solutions, at least it focuses the minds of technologists and engineers, just like wars do! As for sourcing fuel from non despotic and non-lying regimes it seems that the despotic and lying regimes are the ones that have the majority of easy accessible fossil fuel! Regards Derek |

Silly Old Duffer is right! It's up to us (and our engineers) to come up with combinations of other methods of energy rather than oil and gas... The river Severn has the second highest tidal range in the world....maybe it time to look again at harnessing this. Around me there is huge solar farm planned, not ideal to look out over but perhaps better that than a gas fired power station. All I know is that this situation was coming and too many (mainly politicians) buried their heads in the sand. Just to be clear I am not going down the global warming CO2 thing again, it's the fuel we obtain from unfriendly, despotic, unreliable countries that we need to cut down, reduce and eventually stop. As an example of no long term planning I am led to believe that Taiwan is a world leader and maker of "chips" the electronic sort. China has been making threats for years about invading Taiwan, has any leader thought about this and built some chip foundries in other Countries just in case???....no of course not! Regards Derek |

I can't see anything wrong with running dishwasher /washing machine/tumble drier in the eay hours, just needs some planning. At the moment we pay wind power men not to produce when supply exceeds demand. Seems like a very sensible suggestion, no one is saying you can't use power at peak times if you're prepared to pay, and if demand does exceed supply I'd rather they switched off my washing machine than the lights. Should I open a book on how long it takes for this to descend to a climate denier rant. I would give it about ....10 minutes ! Regards Derek

On my Emco FB2 mt2, I finger tight the drawbar and only a fraction of a turn ( less than an 1/8) with thumb and fore finger on the Allen key is enough to hold it in place. The special small nut at the top of the spindle and the drawbar is used to release the mt grip But never over tighten! Derek |

If we are discussing models actually seen face to face, at the SMEE 100th anniversary some years ago, which had a disappointingly low attendance, I was able to see almost the entire collection of Cherry Hills models and Dr Bradbury Winters model "Como". I witnessed prof Chaddock starting and running Lew Blackmores 9 cylinder rotary engine. I also went to the Liverpool maritime museum some years ago and was able to see the fantastically detailed marine steam engines by (I think?) a certain Commander Baker - I stand to be corrected on the name though.... Regards Derek Barker (not Baker.) No relation to the current MEW writer of the same surname but much more mediocre talent though! Edited By Hopper on 19/08/2022 11:32:04 Thanks Hopper, Yes I agree those pics you reposted of that engine room.....magnificent!!! Regards Derek |
Thread: CO2 - Dumb question |
19/08/2022 11:36:06 |
I am finding this thread fascinating seeing both sides of the argument, my problem is when one side appears to have lost the argument they then start the personal attacks. Can we be more civil towards each other please? Is it possible on this topic ? Or is that it is too polarising for each group to be able to analyse each others data and evidence. ? Otherwise this discussion will just go round and round. Derek |
