Thread: The Raspberry Pi gets domesticated |
04/11/2020 10:51:08 |
Dave..............."Rarely turns out well when people act on duff information"........are we still on the topic of computers? or has the thread accidently moved to erm,..... a more topical subject !!! I once had an Oric 1, typed in reams of Basic commands from magazines then spent the rest of the day debugging it, until my Mum pulls out the mains lead and all was lost...... Not sure I have enough time in the day to play about with Raspberry's or Ardunio's now but it does look a fun thing to play with when the workshop is too cold.... Regards to all Derek |

Thread: Evaluating & Correcting Wear in an ML7 |
28/10/2020 12:19:00 |
I am sure the late great Tubal Cain aka T D Walshaw, made a case described in the ME years ago of converting his wide guide Myford to narrow guide... Cannot recall the rational for this, but I will try and find the article Regards to all Derek PS "waxing a dirt floor"......I like that!!! |

Very interesting results, and great use of a spreadsheet to show what is happening with the wear on your lathe bed. I have a myford super 7 circa 1962/3 and I will check mine in the same way as you did. I will leave it to others with more knowledge than me regarding wear on machine tools but it does seem to agree with your conclusions that much of the wear is on the front of the front shear which suggests that conversion to wide guide will not have much affect... The middle two graphs at the tailstock end do seem to confirm this is due to the tailstock as it uses the middle two shears for guidance. Not sure what the myford tolerances are but since we are looking at 1 or 2 thou over 24 inches in the worse case is this acceptable for a myford?....I am not sure... Over to the other boys and girls of the forum.... Regards Derek

Thread: ML7 cross-slide and compound slide bearing upgrades |
24/10/2020 11:56:20 |
Hi I am almost at the end of the modifications to my Myford super 7 crosslide as per the design by George Thomas. I fitted two sets of needle bearings etc as per the design. I will try and post some pics soon. When I had to modify the crosslide bracket I had to mount it on the faceplate and then having no crosslide function, I swung the topslide through 90 and used that as the crosslide. It went ok, but I was extra careful as didnt have a spare bracket if it all happened to end in disaster! So far it's looking to be a fantastic upgrade to the old super 7 crosslide. Regards to all Derek |
Thread: Griptru wil not ad just |
21/10/2020 07:13:08 |
I think my chuck looks like yours Steve, however I have not stripped it down to check, or clean. The chuck is probably as old as the lathe circa 1963. However I treat it as a standard 3 jaw chuck and I dont bother with the griptru function. As long as I do all machining operations at the same time it's fine for me. If i need to rechuck a previous machined component i will use a independent 4 jaw and a "clock".....not sure if that's quicker than twiddling the adjusting screws on the the griptru or not......perhaps I should try! The late great Tubal Cain who I have always regarded as one of my virtual mentors, said "there is always more than one solution to an engineering problem".... 66 days to chrimbo????......you have ruined my day!!!! Best wishes Derek

Great to be able to put faces to names. Well done Neil, for setting this up. I will make sure I dont end up baby sitting 3 grandchildren under 6 next time and take a more active part at the next meeting! Regards to all Derek |

Great job! Like the videos.....you have got "the" bug now ! Next job to make a boiler and run it on steam... Well done I have been following the build log and the care that you took in making the engine has paid off. Kind regards Derek |

Regards to all Derek PS Every year when anyone in my family asks me what I would like for Christmas I always reply "metal - here is the list", the looks and comments that I get ! |
Thread: Engineering Sights on Google Streetview |

I got dragged by my better half last year to the Denby Pottery centre in Derbyshire, next to the car park I am think there were some remains of an engine but not sure. Next time I get dragged there I will take a photo. Isn't there an old beam engine in the middle of a roundabout in Birmingham? A great topic by the way! Regards to all Derek |

Thread: Steel stock for newbie ??? |
11/09/2020 08:32:04 |
This is a good example of why this forum is so good! Btw it may be a good idea to introduce some sort of colour coding to the different types of steel that you intend to get, it can be difficult determining one type from another if they all get mixed up As mine have........... (unhappy face) Regards to all Derek |

Hi Dave, I thought that cover picture was fantastic, so funny and very "seasonal" I bought the mag just for the cover!!!! Perhaps we ought to have a competition for the best Christmasy picture to go on the front of this years MEW? Regards Derek |
Thread: Jobs we had as kids |
08/09/2020 13:11:16 |
At 16 (1974) having left school and before I started my marine engineering apprenticeship I had a part time job in a carpet warehouse operating a flypress cutting the hole in the corner of carpet samples. The carpet samples were then collated in the right order and the hole through each was used to fasten them together..... Regards to all Derek |

Thread: GHT crosslide micrometer collars for the myford S7 |
28/08/2020 07:39:20 |
Hi all, I have been an admirer of George Thomas designs and have made many of the tools and equipment he described in the ME. I am thinking of making this crosslide micrometer dial modification which he recommends, to my Myford Super 7 (non metric) circa 1962/3 lathe. Has anyone carried out this modification? How did it go? Has it been useful and worthwhile? Yes I know I could fit a DRO!.... but I would sooner blow the money on a DRO for the Emco mill. Regards to all Derek |
Thread: Locktite |
24/08/2020 11:49:38 |
Hi Jason, How do you deal with the locked in stress after chain drilling out the crankshaft out of a piece of mild steel? There are solutions such as use black hot rolled steel or normalise it, but just wondered if you have had issues in this area and if so what do you do to overcome it? I suppose a lot depends on the thickness of material and the size of the cut outs... Regards Derek |
Thread: Any idea what this is guys & gals |
24/08/2020 08:03:54 |
It does look like an air tool though, why not connect it to an air supply through a regulator and gradually increase the air pressure see what happens? Derek |
