Thread: Sensor for toy
05/11/2013 16:04:03

Would if I could, but it was on an end of line 1/2 price sale, and was the last one.

It works, but only manually.

Still have to check the voltage at those bare wire ends.

Geoff - Proof reading/checking BH600G Apron oiling write-up before posting. Yes it's done! Photos up first though.

The good news is that Warco have both the worm gear and Transmission Shaft in stock.

Makes me think that this is an all too popular replacement part.

Just waiting for the shock of delivered prices.

Geoff - Lazy day so should finish the BH600G write-up. I did say SHOULD though.

05/11/2013 09:50:33

Well, my fear about that graunched worm gear has been proved right!

Started machining the first of the drilling machine vice hold down bolts yesterday and the problem reared its ugly head.

Manual feed is fine as expected, but power feed to the Saddle had the problem surface.

The graunched teeth on the worm gear are causing the Saddle to go through a stop/start soft banging routine, which is neither conducive to getting a good finish nor keeping my nerves intact!

If I continue using power feed, then more teeth will vanish, so I gave up and reverted to having my bare! left hand being hit by hot swarf. Gloves I hear someone shouting. Yes I know, but bl**dy brain still in flippin work to rule mode.

Now I've never cut a gear before, and the thought of even trying to machine a concave form worm gear is just a non-starter and fills me with the heeby jeebies, unless someone has a brilliant solution.

Many of you I am sure could turn one up without so much a batting an eyelid, but I'm not in that exhalted group unfortunately. I've got the books detailing how it's done, but it's all about confidence that is sadly lacking right now for me to even contemplate such a job.

Stupid me never bothered to measure the gear when the Apron was off, but, I do now know how to get the Apron off without too much hassle.

These things do try one at times.

Will try Waro for a spare.

Geoff - Not quite crying into my coffee. "Behave like a man!" from her indoors

Neil,

Cheap and cheerfull it most certainly is, and other half said a bunch of ladies nearly had pups when one of them activated the thing by moving her hand in front of it, and it burst into life with flashing eyes and voice. SHMBO joined in the laughter as well.

There is a 4mm wide slot in a front facing moulding that houses the sensor.

I never bothered to inspect them when they where first put on the shelf for sale, so cannot describe the sensor.

Bazyle,

Will check the voltage.

Thank you both for your quick responses.

Geoff - I WILL have to replace the damaged power feed worm gear in the lathe. Oh effing bother!

04/11/2013 14:41:29

Some advise sought please.

Other half bought one of Morrison's Halloween Petrifying Prisoner toys at half price yesterday.

Unfortunately someone had removed/half inched the small front facing activation sensor, with just two bare wires where it should be.

Does anyone have any idea what that sensor is and can I get something similar.

The 'toy' works via the 'Test Me' button.

I will be in credit if I can get it to work via a sensor.

Power is by means of three AA batteries, but haven't checked if connected in //le or series.

Geoff - Ready to machine the drill vice bolts.

Thread: What did you do today? (2013)
03/11/2013 10:37:00

Yesterday.

Silver soldered the Boxford shaper table direction selector ratchet lever back together, after ANOTHER episode.

I was machining the bevels in the extra T-slots I'd just added to the lathe Cross-slide, it overhanging the shaper table by quite a margin on the RH side. Winding the table to the right I felt resistance, but brain was on strike so I just continued, the result being a bang, followed by a clatter as the selector knob and shaft flew across the workshop and landed on the floor.

Now, not all that long ago, I would have grabbed the nearest implement and hurled it far and wide, but I've now learned my lesson and just walk straight out of the workshop for a cuppa to calm down. Brain being on strike, however, such reaction was completely lacking on this occasion, with just a "Oh bother, not again!" thought.

By comparison, however, fitting the ArcTrade bellows to the lathe was a complete doddle, the lathe bed and Leadscrew between the Headstock and Saddle now completely covered, and easily removed when needed.

Now sorting out some quick and easy to tighten screws for the drill press vise T-nuts.

Geoff - The BH600G write-up is turning into a marathon, as brain still not co-operating fully!

Thread: #209 - new look

N,

Growing with reference to organic matter yes, no problem with that, nothing more natural.

It's when it's used in conjunction with an inanimate lifeless object, that's when it makes the blood overheat a tad.

SHMBO and myself have controlled our middles from 'growing' too much. The never ending battle.

Geoff - Searching for another post somewhere where I mentioned '... let's be at it' but can't find it!

02/11/2013 17:08:41

Norman,

Bad move there!

I DARE not tote up the cost of all the magazines & books I have, as it will give me palpitations or worse, and that doesn't cover all the ones I've binned or given away either.

Yaoo are still totally ignoring their users, resulting in their share price now sliding.

Happy customers = survival & expansion

No customers = death to the business

Geoff - I REFUSE point blank to use the word growth or growing instead of expansion or expanding! Old fart I am and like being so, so there!

JohnS (The original one)

Your posts never fail to lighten my day.

Your last one re BR Time Table had me howling - with laughter that is. Very un-PC, but I don't give a flying frig.

Geoff - Struggling with the BH600G write-up, hence the delay. Brain on bl**dy strike.

Thread: I screwed up!

It's done at last!

Treatment and that horrible winter virus put the mockers on thing for a while.

Putting everything back right now, and all appears to be back to normal, but need to install the Feed Shaft to check that the worm gears mesh properly, as some of the teeth on the gunmetal? gear have been graunched.

I will be doing a separate post on what I did & how, as I think it's important for all the owners of similar machines to know what oiling problems these machines have.

Took a while to come up with a suitable oiling solution, after rejecting many ideas, but I'm happy with the outcome having tested it on the bench.

I now need to sort out the write-up and annotate the photos, so hopefully will post sometime next week.

Geoff - BH my first post was 3rd August!

Thread: What did you do today? (2013)

Can confirm what MichaelG said.

Shorter spring = harder spring

I lowered my 105e Anglia by cutting 2ins off of the front springs, and that made a significant difference to the ride.

Resorted to having a new standard set reset 2ins shorter.

The cut springs worked a treat when I eventually converted the car and raced it at Kyalami.

Geoff - Daydreaming about my youthful escapades.

25/10/2013 09:28:49

Wait for it everyone . . . .

I've finished repairing the lathe!

What would have been a couple of days work at my youthful best, has taken flipping ages, not withstanding treatment and the horrible winter virus.

If someone had said the 'silver lining' thing at the time I discovered that i had bent the shaft, they would have received a biff. (Can remember my Dad searching for a length of 2x4 after some yoofs threatened to pin his ears back, with Mom & I talking him out of the inevitable contretemps. 4-1 odds not too good)

However, I did discover the total lack of any oil being able to get to any bearing surface or gears in the Apron, so that took some while to rectify, so 'silver lining' there definitely was.

Spent yesterday putting everything back together again, and adjusted the Cross-slide leadscrew nut to give a couple of thou play. Will adjust again later, as its very easy to do.

Everything appears to work as precious, but I still need to connect the power feed shaft to see if the worm gears mesh properly, as the gunmetal? one had the tops of a couple of teeth chewed up.

I WILL be using 5mm brass tube in place of spring pins in both the Leadscrew and Feed Shafts, and if these fail too easily, drilled/waisted brass pins.

Will be doing a new thread on what and how I did everything, with photos once I've annotated them.

I can now confirm that taking the Apron off of this type of lathe is a doddle.

Now to fix the shaper.

Geoff - Feeling rather chuffed.

Thread: Could Concorde ever fly again? No, says British Airways
25/10/2013 08:41:57

Can remember watching it do a circle of Johannesburg in 1971/2 or thereabouts.

The noise it made was something else, and no real surprise that the USA banned it at first.

The noise got everyone in the office rushing to the nearest window to investigate.

Quite a sight with its nose drooped.

Geoff - Lathe finished! Write-up & photos to follow.

Thread: New Look
05/10/2013 14:18:36

Well done Katy!

I've deliberately refrained in passing comment before I had used the 'new' layout for a while.

Other than the RH advertising, that is somewhat distracting to say the least, everything else is fine.

The lighter green is so so much easier on the eyes.

Could the black Home bar just flow into the green Login bar, as its a bit disjointed and looks like an afterthought, with the black jarring.

!yahoo need to employ you, instead of wasting the millions they have on their new useless CEO.

Katy IS listening, and fixing what she can, that cannot be said of !yahoo.

I've designed websites in the past, and it takes ages getting it right and tested, something !yahoo will go down in web history as having failed miserably, and upset just about all of its user base.

Three cheers for Katy, she DIDN'T do a !Yahoo on us!

Geoff - Not every web designer is a moronic idiot, just those at !yahoo.

Thread: What is this locomotive component for?
05/10/2013 09:44:15

Thanks Eddie for confirming my own suspicion that I may have been in error.

Was going to add '/vacuum' to my post, but for some reason didn't.

The intermittent action of the pump had me thinking vacuum.

Geoff - Ah well just confirms that grey matter not up to scratch right now.

03/10/2013 18:17:43

Weir type water pump Rick.

Seen it in action close up once.

Geoff - Er, nowt to say! Booger, I'm slipping.

Thread: Please don't do aYahoo!
03/10/2013 10:32:30

JS,

Just had a pop up advising that forthcoming !yahoo groups changes are going to break the modplugin.

The creator is looking for funding!

Not sure if I want anything to do with those MORONS at !yahoo! anymore.

Geoff - Was going to give JS a kiss for restoring my yahoo sanity, but thought better of it!

Thread: Does anyone use the 'My Friends' feature of this forum?
03/10/2013 09:06:42

Bazyle,

OuBaille? Never been there, and certainly only as a voluntary visitor if I ever do though )

OuBallie dear chap OuBallie.

Thanks for the kind comment re my sig, I try my best

I will not/have not used any of those silly 'Like' buttons.

I wonder if any who do, have real friends, or is it just a competition to see who has the highest number of 'Likes'?

Geoff - Woohoo one person 'Likes' my Sig!

They will progress in the same way that laser printers have.

10 years and we will all have one.

Have a look here:

This is worth a watch from Jay Leno.

Geoff - Would love one of those!
