Thread: Singer 660 A1 sewing machine
24/07/2015 08:53:45

Yesterday.

Time to try and tame the the start up of the machine, as it takes off as soon as the clutch bites, making it difficult to start sewing leather.

A servo motor would of course solve the problem, but that would be the absolute last solution.

Leverage sprang to mind, so I grabbed a piece of 20mm sq tube, drilled three holes to lign up with those in the clutch arm, bolted it in place, and extending said arm by 8.1/2" (215mm).

Had to fit that long bolt to the end in order to get the two foot pedal rods to hook up.

The result had me whooping with joy as I can now get the machine to start at a crawl, thus making it much more pleasant to use.

Geoff - This has to be my quickest mod ever surprise

Neil,

I'll become permanently cross-eyed if I continue looking at that bl@@dy Pluto photo disgust

Geoff - Only see triple angry

Use the pein (peen) end of a ball pein hammer to knock off filler used on my 1935 Austin Seven, and now have a few perfectly round projections to knock back later, all on a visible rear quarter panel.

Geoff - Stupid or what?

Metalmuncher,

While making coffee around 1450h today, heard the sound of a Merlin engine being worked, so rushed out and spied a single aircraft doing a couple of circuits around Eye.

Could just make out what looked like D-Day stripes on the wings.

Definitely not a Spitfire as its wings had straight leading and trailing edges, but too far away to see details of fuselage or anything else about the thing.

A couple of minutes later it headed SW - To Duxford?

Workshop a cool 23-24°

Geoff - Next I'l be complaining about the cold indecision

Thanks Clive.

Very informative, and just confirms what I said about nature.

The American attempt at 'domesticating' their bees proved that and backfired, with them now having more problems than before.

Geoff - Last night, 0215h on, reminded me of a Jhb thunder storm.

oil stops it oxidizing

Paul,

Yes understood, but.

Always a but isn't there

Putting oil onto a surface you want to weld goes against the grain, as well as everything I've been taugh and methods used.

Geoff - Hence my 'What am I missing?"

PS:

Too hot/humid to think straight

Clive,

Could you go into more detail about the problem the U.S. had please.

We interfere with nature at our peril, but seem totally unable to prevent ourselves or rather Govts & big business from doing so.

Geoff - Bees scarce in my garden, compared to a few years ago.

I have used solder on alloy by covering it in oil then scratch a clean surface through the oil then solder through the oil. this keeps the air away from the clean surface.

Oil?

What am I missing? surprise

Geoff - Melting

Metalmuncher,

Ah, now I know what that aircraft is making that noise, but too far off to identify properly, it flying around the Eye Hoxne area.

A Harvard would regularly appear above Linden, a suburb of Jhb., and go through an aerobatics routine and dive bombing, this in the '50s & '60s.

Those two I saw where purring along, whereas an A6 sounds totally different.

Have only seen Concorde once, and that was when it was 'Showing the Flag' and touting for business.

It was doing a circle of Johannesburg, and my lasting memory is the noise its engines made, even though it was some distance away and in droop snoot mode.

Lucky man MichaelG!

Geoff - Never seen a V-Bomber much to my regret.

Metalmuncher,

It must have been them that I heard last week but got outside too late and just saw them disappearing SW, from Gt Yarmouth I would think. Too far away to make out what they where.

The two engines together sounded like radials, so no doubt just out of sync.

The size of those Typhoon Canard wings surprised me somewhat for some reason.

Back after a meal at Mr. Ds American Diner, which is on the A11 South bound, just North of Attleborough, and highly recommended.

Geoff - Now for 40winks.

Ed,

I LIKE it yes

Put me on the list please.

Got one of those holders and wondered how to put it to good use, so now you have put another 'sidetracked' item on my list as if I don't have enough, cheers devil

Geoff - I should change my Moniker to 'Sidetracked'

Is the coolant to keep the head temp down while machining?

Geoff - Modified the Skyhooks.

Clive & all other bee lovers,

Forgive the post, but I think it's important.

The government’s about to decide whether to let bee-killing pesticides back into the UK.

Environment Secretary Liz Truss Makes a decision tomorrow but still time to sign the petition

Low cloud ceiling prevented the Spitfire, with D-Day markings, making its appearance at the Diss Carnival on Sunday.

Was looking forward to the sight and sound, as previously.

Geoff - Oh well, better luck next year.
