Thread: ACME taps and Dies |
07/01/2018 10:48:14 |
I once made a 3/8" (if memory serve right) acme tap for clearing out after single point threading on a new bronze cross slide nut for an old Grayson lathe refurbish. It managed OK but was not easy. It would NEVER have removed the lot in one go. No, not never! Rik |

Because of itchy dry skin round me ankles I need to apply cream daily. Because I cannot get down there to do it I use a 12" long plastic dish washing aid which has a foam pad attached to the end. This gives me enough extra reach to do the job. Today I found the foam pad was partially detached so I stuck it back on with HAFIX superglue and held it in place with my thumb. Two second later I felt a searing burn on my thumb and dropped the handle with a yelp. I never knew that stuff like this generated THAT much heat as it cures - lesson learnt. Rik

Ken - You asked for opinions - here's mine: I would have NO objection seeing your ad in the classifieds given the small scale of your ops. It seems wholly appropriate that any one on this forum looking for the sort of help that you offer should find it in the classifieds - end of!. Rik |

Murray - I am not deeply into astronomy but a friend who is once told me years ago that it was best if contemplating a reflector / mirrored type for hobby use to go for one of minimum 7" diameter. Maybe the more knowledgeable “gazers” around here can offer more up to date tips. Rik |

Just idly gazing out at the garden and contemplating the extra 4" or so of white "insulation" on the roof of the workshop - brrrrr! Rik |
Thread: Grayson Lathe refurb |
30/11/2017 20:47:03 |
Martin - The Grayson was my first lathe back in the eighties. It was worn out but I pulled all the stops out on a refurb carried out on "someone else's" machinery which entailed making a new headstock spindle, remachining cross slide/ top slide and fitting new gibs. Remade cross slide acme screw thread and nut (made, hardened and ground an acme tap in HSS for the bronze nut) Re-machined tailstock and made and fitted new spindle. Final job was to skim the bed. Was a lovely little lathe when finished and I was very sad when I had to sell it to help finance the divorce which followed. But life moves on and I am pleased that I have now got a bigger one Rik |

Thread: Engineering related instruments |
23/11/2017 20:00:04 |
I have read Stewart Hart's current thread on his Beam Compass (nice work Stewart) and I intended to post this on that thread as there are some similarities but although related, I think it might have smacked of highjack hence this new thread. I "rescued" this fine example of British instrument making a few years back at a local boot sale - £2 if memory serves right. I'll never use it but it is such a lovely example of instrument making that I thought it might evoke some memories for chaps hereabouts if I posted photos of it. Anyone who has used one will recognize it as a Planimeter and this one was made by ALLBRIT. Rik |
Thread: Dies |

Only two types I know of are the split adjustable die designed for cutting a thread from scratch or a solid die nut - more suited to cleaning up or finishing an existing thread. Rik Edited By Rik Shaw on 20/11/2017 08:59:58 |

Thread: If I can find the extra funds would they be welt spent ? |
09/11/2017 16:49:40 |
If I was contemplating spending that much I would never rely on photos for a second hand lathe. Best to inspect in person and if your lathe experience is zero, try and take someone with you who knows lathes and will know what to look for wear wise. Also, you will give yourself a better chance of picking up a good second hand machine if you can broaden your search criteria re: make and model. Good luck in your search. Rik |

I am convinced that the sole future energy source for mankind will be from that big golden ball in the sky. Solar panels are just our first crude attempt at harnessing this free energy. Watch this space - you ain't seen nothing yet! Rik |
