Thread: 55 Degree dovetail cutter, Where from? |
22/09/2014 19:23:04 |
Hi Ian, just a thought..... what about one of those cheap and cheerful Chinese tipped cutters......thinking, don't laugh... what about putting it in a drill press then touch it with a 4" grinder to get the angle whilst it's spinning then just grind back the back edge...there'll only be a few to do......I'm sure it'll do as a throw away... get lucky....Frank in France....... |

Hi one and all, we keep about forty chicken's...10 ducks and 12 geese...... can't wait for the spring, new chickens start to lay double yoker's for a week or two...mmmm........and they are not always large.... but I prefer the duck eggs for breakfast....I only eat the goose egg's in an omelette as it's just to much on it's own..... just the odd time you can get an egg with no shell, now that feel's weird..... When I lived in Africa occasionally you'd get offered an Ostrich egg......

HI guy's happy 2 report that the adjustment to the slop in the cross slide was an easy fix..... on my machine ..on the cross slide in the middle there are 2 Allen screw's with a tiny grub screw between them.....the center screw controls a wedge that when u screw it in, the grub screw forces the wedge between the 1/2 nut's....... it doe's get rid of the free play but for me it did tighten the cross slide at the extremity of travel....but who care's..... as alway's thanks 4 the help.... Thread: COLCHESTER STUDENT HEADSTOCK ADJUSTMENT |

Hi Hugh, welcome...I'm a newbie 2 but ur problem is an easy fix.....
HI Hugh, welcome...I'm a newbie 2 but the problem was an easy fix....
I had the same problem with my sqare top student......I guess they'll b simillar, finger's crossed.......
I had 2 remove the rear cover and the external gear's for access and getting on ur knees look at the lathe bed at the back under the head....in the filth....u'll find 2 Allen bolts, give them a turn or so 2 loosen them and the same likewise under the chuck at the front......it was said that if the lathe is level, just by undoing the bolt's and then nipping them up again it was probably going 2 do the job but not 4 me I'm afraid......
I loosened them again and with a 2" bar about a foot long in the chuck (tight).....pulling on the bar in the direction I wanted 2 go, I GENTLY TAPPED the chuck with a copper mallet and then tightened the bolt's up again...the problem fixed....I did not feel any movement when I tapped the chuck but it did the job.....apparently at the back of the lathe around those bolt's there is some sort of a screw jack arrangement that the factory used when a new lathe was being set up.....everybody said that it probably won't be nec. to use it.....for me they were correct.....
I guess that moving them around by truck must shake them up a bit .....
hope this works 4 u.....
good luck.....Frank in France

Frank in France, Good morning out there.....Help please..... 1 I need to adjust the cross slide nut's (to much free play) on the above machine, looked in the parts book but not much help....any idea's....... 2 I'm just fed up with the original 3 jaw chuck, (only holds on the back of the jaw's) would like a new one.....I'm scared of buying without a recomend and all this talk of getting a duffer after spending loads. So can anyone recomend a make and if they make something accurate....I don't mind where in the world it come's from and price is not everything but as a hobbyist I can't afford a £1000 for a six jaw.....a good used one would be OK its just got to be accurate as poss..... I know perhaps I should get used to a 4 jaw but I'm not that fast at alignment as I'm always in a rush for something..... many thanks Frank

Thread: high tensile stainless steel |
12/04/2014 06:59:42 |
Frank in France Good morning, well it is. the sun's up and the bird's are singing...just has to goodstart to the day.... My question......I need to make some thru studding for a motor cycle engine, (I have only one for a sample) these thread into the cranck-case, thru the cylinder barrel's (4) and then hold the head down.....reason for stainless they are highly visual and u can't get cadmium done any more !!......so what would be the best grade to use...they are 250mm x 10mm long....also..This same engine, 1/2 of the big end nut's are missing...the same question as above but can I buy the hex bar the correct grade so I only have to thread and part it off ? where can it be bought ?....thread size 8mm x 0.75.... This engine has a max RPM of 4000, so it's a little important to get this one correct... Well thanks in advance.....I find this a liitle embarrasing to keep asking question's, I hope one day I can help someone else......as alway's u guy's are a mind full of info.......what a great forum..... thanks Frank |

Thread: Mating a drillchuck to an arbor |
02/11/2013 21:19:04 |
HI Guy's ...I've a few old drill press's bought used and the chuck's used to work loose after a while.... I used 222 Locktight or screw - lock to keep them together.....clean the chuck and its mating face...just a couple of drops of the fluid, hand fit...spin to check for run out...once ur satisfied place a block of wood under the chuck and hang a weight on the operation arm to keep the chuck tight...overnight shoud do it......one of mine was real bad, had tram lines in it, used a little extra fine valve grinding paste to lap it in, a good clean up and Locktite...it's never come of.......only do this if u'll never want the chuck off again say for say MT drill bits.... Frank in France |
Thread: Colchester Student Lathe |
19/10/2013 12:06:23 |
Hi Nigel,
mine's a square head....bit like me ...... how right u are, I did find the chuck jaw's gripping at the back...so I held an accurate ring on the inside so that the jaws were locked and cleaned them up with a tipped v/heavy boring tool...it didn't need much......this did seem to improve the parting of but not by much......I now part way turn off the jobs untill I get scared and then finish the job with a hack-saw.....if it the stub is still a bit thick I do it with the chuck spinning slowly....... does anybody know the machine no's to find out if I have an early machine or not..... Have checked the turning torque of the chuck - in neautral (between gears) and it takes about 3 - 5lbs / ft to get it moving so by my reckoning theres enough preload on the bearing to eliminate the chuck shakes..... I'm afraid there's nobody else here to ask, where I live in France, my house is the last chance saloon.....thats unless there's anybody around Bordaux on the forum......if there is let me know, my wife bake a good cake and the kettle is always on !!!!!! I'll have a look at the Bison chuck....... does anybody have a copy of "screwcutting in the Lathe" by Martin Cleeve. they want to sell ?? thanks for ur time and trouble......Frank |
