Thread: mig welder troubles |
21/08/2015 06:43:47 |
thanks one and all 4 the quick replies...... I've been using MIG's almost since they first came out...... as for using 0.6 wire, always welded light steel car bodies and light fabrications, so .6 is just a habit..... the wire is def 0.6 along with a new set of correct rollers (first thing I tried) ...the drive wheels are always set so that if there is a problem they just spin/slip on the wire......the wire spool is in perfect condition it's stored in a hot cupboard with my stick welding rods at about 25C,,,absolutely no rust..... having the tip on the header makes no difference.... the 4m torch was always kept/used as straight as poss.....but it's never been a problem before...been using a 4m torch on this machine for about 10 years without trouble...this one is around 2 years old.....just got up one morning and the troubles started....used the machine a week ago with no trouble at all.......crazy..... just for fun I'm gonna try a Teflon liner...... SO, have just ordered a new 3m torch and a 5kg roll of 0.8 wire....we'll c how this goes..... just wish I could justify a new TIG....£1500 is a lot of money for DIY use...... thanks Clogs |

HI all, I'm at my wit's end....... problem is the mig wire (0.6 mild steel) keeps jamming in the cable / tube.... the wire spool is new (15kgs) and have changed the liner with a brand new one, which is a close wound metal spring..........still jamming......have now bought a quality new torch and cable complete (£100)..... the torch is a professional Binzal type, 4m long........still the same problem...... having installed the new torch, the wire gets slowed down enough for the driving wheel to spin...tighten the tension screw and the wire ends up in a knot..... now taken the new torch to bits, when feeding the fresh wire thru no problems but screw back on the bent part (head of the torch) the wire get's very very slow......remove the bent part, at the same feed setting, all OK..... I've used mig's since they first came out.....this machine is a quality unit and like me semi retired but "still working" ...sometimes......hahaha..... This machine has only been used for mild steel welding since new....... also, the machine is stored and used in a warm room, kept constantly at 22C year round....NO damp problems........ never had a problem quite like this.....which at least the grey cells can remember. Question:- is there a new Teflon type liner to replace the spring type..?..if so what results... where exactly does the weld wire get the current for welding..is it the copper nipple on the end ? surely not the liner...as when using ally wire then u use a plastic liner (I think)? any help would b most grateful..... thanks Clogs

I guess the Hayabusa needed the turbo as it'd b a bit sluggish without.....hahaha...... all I could afford in the old days was 2 Ariel Arrow engines bolted together...... Clogs |

Thread: Hard spots in mild steel |
15/08/2015 18:29:04 |
HI all, I reckon most of the steel we buy had a previous life, Cadillac bumper comes to mind...... most suppliers will buy in the cheapest steel they can get....mostly from China - India that's unless it a special grade.. then who know's......... when it's sitting on a dock side it could be anything from anywhere...u can't trust the paper work..... I have to drill angle iron all the time for my regular work and this problem happens all the time..... the odd hole I just use reg quality drill bit's but if it's series of the same size holes I use a good ol Meddings drill press with De-Walt Extreme drill bit's...I only use a pilot hole for anything over 10mm in a hand drill....these Extreme bits are self starting and hardly ever go blunt...well worth the £50 squids..... clogs

Thread: Workshop Disposal |
15/08/2015 18:14:28 |
Mr David Clark, ur answer to this subject make my belly ache with laughter....... a good friend is what I plan to use to help out her indoors..... the other thing I do is to have a code on all the machines......the price I paid for it and it's current value, easy to update once per year.......so the boss know's whats she's left with at a glance...... My wife is a good-un and helps out in the w/shop all the time........she's no Arfur Daily but a good with money, she's got all mine hahaha....... What I'm really hoping for is to find a good enthusiastic young-un to train up and he/she can have it all for "Gratis" that's provided they take all the junk as well....hahaha..... I hope I have a good few years left before I get into place (coffin) where these services are needed.... Clogs |
Thread: Slipping drill chuck |
15/08/2015 17:56:18 |
Hi all, I'm prob to late for anyone to take any notice on this subject..... I use my drill;s all day (batt and mains) having nearly 10 machines......as soon as I buy a new one I swop out the original chucks for the keyed type.....have a had a couple of chucks that I couldn't find a direct replacement keyed chuck but just took them to a hire shop and they found them..... Have bought a couple of high quality drill sets I milled the flats on the ends myself ..I keep one set for the hand drills and the other for jobs on the lathe or mill.......unless it's something special I normally never use the chuck key anyway......just spin them by hand........whilst on the subject of drill sets, De-Walt make a set EXTREME with a double ground point with cobalt I think, about £50.....these come with ground flats above 5mm...perfect for stainless and angle-iron great for battery drill etc...these are my go to drill for awkward jobs.... have fun.....clogs

Thread: Keeping rust away |
04/08/2015 17:54:02 |
Hi Richard 2, I'd say practically perfect in every way...just stop temperature fluctuations on the lower degree's of scale...it's the dew point that is the worry... My workshop is huge, drafty and damp, (converted watermill) impossible to heat as a whole.....all my machines are individually covered and heated with an eco bulb from September - March...never a rust problem...... Thread: Cheap loco Hydrolic lift i just bought new |
19/07/2015 07:25:21 |
Hi everyone, for less than £300 u can get a full length Motorcycle Hydraulic lift on wheels (casters on just one end) it's around 2m long and lifts to about 700mm mine 500kgs...... mine is used mainly for motorcycle repairs - engine rebuilds etc also quite handy for loading stuff into the van.... It's just a bit of a lump for the small workshop but it's no so bad to use as a bench.......happy to pass on the importers address...PM me......2/3rds the price of Machine Mart, located in Essex and they do post...... hope this may help Clogs.....

Thread: TIG welding |
06/05/2015 07:39:23 |
Hi all, now for the stupid question.
Any recommends as to a AC /DC tig machine, mostly for St St and ally once competent.....
I also need to make a frame and girder forks for a 30's Indian 4 ......
Can gas, arc and mig with the best of them.....it won't be used everyday or to earn a living..
I just want something 1/2 decent..with a foot pedal.....but a £1000 squids is out of the question, a TIG is pure luxury and still have to get it passed by her-in-doors....hahaha.....
Or just forget it.....
If I could get 1/2 as good as Involute Curves photo's b well happy.....
As for my frame, didn't quite fancy gas brazing such thing, banana's come to mind...
Always scared of fle-bay.....I did look into it a few years ago but the price then was over £2,000.....Any help appreciated, I know it's a mine field.....
Thanks, clogs

Thread: Myford ML7 or Super 7 |
27/04/2015 18:24:39 |
Hi again, and thanks for the reply...... Paul, no problem with a Boxford at all, it's just that the Myford is a friends house being stored for his F/in law..... and it's in the next village....... I regret selling my one owner Super 7 awhile ago, my Colchester Student is fine but a small machine would come in handy.......and apart from that there is a few other machines to be had and I want to pay my way fairly..... thanks again Clogs......... |
27/04/2015 16:13:39 |
Hi all, can anyone give me a rough guide to the difference between a Myford 7 and a super 7......... also is the super 7 worth 10% - 20% more etc......? I'm looking at a clean machine on a bench with drawers and a drip try, as for tooling no idea yet.......but would like to be fair with my offer........ many thanks Clogs |
