Sheepskin mittens. Not elegant or even pretty, but the best in my experience. Don’t go for gloves with fingers in as they loose too much heat. Sheepskin is pretty wind resistant which most man made materials aren’t, and keeps the heat in.

Apologies for any double entendres in the title, but years ago I saw somewhere designs for those quick setting nuts that look as if they have another hole drilled through them at a slight angle to the main thread so allowing them to be slipped down a long thread easily before tightening. The original article I think was somehow related to a design for a drawbar of some sort but memory could be playing tricks. Any ideas for the design to save me hours of fiddling around with angles and diameters. Or indeed any other bright ideas for something similar? Are any available commercially (at a sensible price....)?

My old Bantam mk1 takes a Headstock sleeve adapter MT4 - 3 (supplied by RDG) and all seems to fit well. Total cost under a tenner..

When I was a pharmacist making up potions for a living we had a bottle of Sodium Chloride (aka common salt) on the shelf. This had a shelf life date marked on it (usually about 2 years). I mainly used it on my chips when we were closed at lunchtime.The salt in the bottle almost certainly came from underneath Cheshire, and was probably about 220 million years old. The inspectors were happy though.

As a kid I used to use acetone. Dissolve some perspex scraps in acetone in a bottle- leave it to stew for a while (maybe a day or so) and play around until you get a thickish liquid, a bit like the polystyrene cement we use to use on Airfix kits. Ah Airfix kits, happy days making Spitfires and ME109s and hanging them from the ceiling of my bedroom....

Strange because my Bantam mk1 800 I'm sure has the same stand and the adjustable foot does have a 1"UNF adjuster. The other 3 'feet' aren't threaded as the hole in them is just for bolting down the stand to the floor. I don't think the stand was supplied with any feet to go in the three fixed lugs/feet.

'Alum' is a generic term for a small group of similar chemicals, so yes there may be some differences. However it is a long time since I had to access the subject in the grey matter and now the details are elusive. Google 'alum wiki' for some information.

Thanks for all the comments, and also to Muzzer for his exposé on the gearbox contents- fascinating and curious. I have been playing with figures and also the 'boxfthreadp.exe' program which is an oddly written thing but once you understand its Idiosyncrasies it works quite well. I have calculated the gearbox ratios for the Bantam to put into the program and when you enter the list of gears you have it seems to work well. One odd thing is that it can give a set of results which may look odd, but if you reduce the % error you specify, even down to quite low tolerances, you get a completely new set of results which may be more useful to you. I have tried cutting a few threads, including the desired 19 and 26 tpi BSPs (why do the Brits seem to make seemingly simple things so quirky?) and it seems to work.

I can supply the gearbox ratios as a text file the program can use if anyone wants it- send me a PM.

Thanks for these thoughts. Simon's calculation works, but I haven't got 56T or 57Tt gears, but it provoked a rush of blood and I now have a glimmer of light in realisation that the tpi required has a relationship with the driven gear, which led me to gearbox 5 (=8 in the calculation) and lever in positn B (=2) which gives me gears 28/38. This is now one gear down as I have a 28T in stock. I assume that the gearboxes etc on the Mk1 and Mk2s are the same but the terminology has changed a bit.

Hopper I understand now how you achieved your calculation because I have just found the 'nthredp' program which is what I suspect you used (or something similar). I haven't got a 20T gear but now I'm 'cooking on gas' as regards the gears I have got, so thank you for the inspiration (the leadscrew is 6mm but this is easily dealt with now).

Does anyone know precisely what the gearbox ratios are so I can make allowances for this in the calculations? I'm a bit loathe to take the gearbox apart to count gears!

Yes I have the 127 and 100 gears and most of the other gears mentioned on the table to cut standard (i.e. not 19tpi) imperial threads. Thank you for having a look. I found the formula a bit odd as it has 2 other unknowns apart from the one you actually want. I'm sure that I could have at one time worked it out from first principles but the grey matter isn't quite so flexible now.....I'm told it's a common failing.

Has anyone any settings for making a 19tpi thread on a Bantam metric lathe? I know there is a formula in the manual which is a bit obscure (to put it mildly) and my maturing brain won't cope with it too well. I'm sure someone else must have wanted this for a BSP thread sometime before I did.

I, in my day job, am a pharmacist, and like most professional institutions we are inspected every year or so. The inspector called some years ago and noticed on a shelf with other drugs and chemicals a jar of Sodium Chloride (aka salt) with a very brown and faded label , which was so old that it didn't even have an expiry date. He pointed out that it wasn't really proper to possess such an item, to which I replied that I only kept it to use on the chips I consumed sometimes at lunchtime when we were closed (not the best thing to admit to an inspector possibly), and that it had been in the ground in Cheshire for the last 50 million years so what was the problem? It still had to go!

Rules is rules, guv. I'm curious what salt turns into when it goes off!

I wouldn't use acetone as it may do horrors to any form of non metal seal, though it will work to help remove any water. Alcohol or rather meths would be the best thing to use as it should be fairly benign as far as anything else is concerned. Flammable though!

Following on from this thread I too have just got an electronic subscription to MEW for my Andoid tablet - it's nice having the ability to look at the back numbers, but the 'app' or whatever it is supposed to be is appalling - very clumsy and difficult to navigate around the page, or even go from one page to the next. Then you have to navigate from one issue to another. It would help if it could come up more full screen, and get rid of the awful time-wasting prompt about tapping the screen to continue when entering a new issue. On a pc with a good sized screen it's just about usable (as it works slightly differently) but far from comfortable to use. On a small screen sized pc it is awful.
