Coupled a Perkins prima to a volvo outdrive, the engine was also marketed as the Volvo MD22 HUGE difference in parts prices. Did a job in the Perkins packing plant, worked round them, so I know they never came from Sweden. Noel. |

One was shown at the midland mex a few years ago, and it was I think on The tube. Dubious engineering then add harmonograph might find it. Noel. |

I'm with Dave and Bernard, oxy/propane or a large propane blow torch. You may have to get it near red heat to break the rust. Or light a bonfire of wood, old pallets in the garden and set it in the middle. Good luck. Noel. |

SOUNDS as though loctite has been used. Some heat will cause expansion and the loctite will give up. Do you have a small blow torch ? As Jason says it should be able to drive it out - put the nuts on the top to protect the thread. Noel. |

Screw slots all in the same plane was the only thing I learnt from my grandfather who was a cabinet maker. One job he did was fitting out on The Queen Mary. It's something that shows that the tradesman cared ! Noel. |

Bit undersize but Could be 6mmX 1mm. Try an ordinary m6 bolt in the thread and see if it fits. Order the right thread but in countersunk socket head HT and use an allen key..As to getting the old ones out, use a 1/4" wide cold chisel on the head to turn them.Tap them round with a hammer. Noel. |
Thread: Kennet tool & cutter grinder |
29/07/2023 15:13:00 |
I agree with Clive both ideas may lead to accident or injury ! There are numerous ways to balance a wheel but use a wheel carrier. The Brierley uses a dovetailed groove round one of the flanges into which little threaded cones sit with a grub screw to set them. Adding, removing or repositioning them sets the balance. Obviously one is going to need a set of balancing ways. Noel. |

Thread: Kennet tool & cutter grinder |

Hi Jeremy, I had wheels from midland Abrasives and like tony found them to be WAY out of balance. Balance of a wheel is very important in any tool and cutter grinder. If you can make mountings for your wheels then you need to incorparate a means of balancing. Then you need to make(or buy) a set of balancing ways. Noel. |
Thread: Hit & Miss Engine - Help Needed |

Without correct valve and spark events the engine will not run. Remove the spark plug and put a wood or plastic rod down the hole so you can find the piston position. There are 2 TDCs in a 4 stroke cycle engine. Watch the valves. When the inlet and exhaust are both closed and the piston at the top of the stroke this is the compression stroke and about 1/8" before this TDC is when the spark happens. Putting your finger over the spark plug hole you will feel the compression - no compression and it will not run. The valve timing ! As the piston rises from BDC the exhaust valve must be open, closing as the piston reaches TDC, at the same time the inlet valve must open to admit the air/fuel mixture. As the piston approaches BDC the inlet valve will close, followed by compression again. Make sure you have a small clearance on the valves may be 5 thou or 0.1mm I do not know this engine so the above is basic principles but should put you in the ball park. Good luck. Noel. |

In the context of the boiler and the era (1939) of the design, if of steel construction then it may well have been gas welded or brazed. The fire tubes look neatly fitted, be it braze or weld. Now would be the time to decide when or if you would run it, and then in public or private. If in public then join a club and speak to the boiler inspector, for private use then you could conduct your own tests if you have the knowledge and equipment, though a club test is best ! Good Luck.
