Thread: Steel Wheels |
20/05/2013 18:57:02 |
Steel should give more grip than C Iron - A lot of free carbon powder in the iron which is why it is used in friction positions (Pistons/Rings/Cylinders to name a few) Full size locos had steel tyres on C Iron wheels to give better grip and longer lasting - Also it was easier to replace a tyre than to replace the whole wheel - Have seen quite a few steel wheels on model locos. |

Thread: Alternative to Myford Super 7 stand/cabinet? |
03/05/2013 09:12:08 |
Hi John F - Think you have got John S's Stand a bit wrong - Think he means the 4x4 are placed horizontal in a fashon that would resemble a bottle store as looked at the front - 2x2 built up in this fashion would mean a lot of extra steel Mikeb |
Thread: Steam engine |
10/03/2013 14:17:56 |
Great inovation - did see preasure cooker used to produce steam to feed into low preasure tube which was used for steaming and then bending hardwoods - that was in back garden joinery works in "Aus" They made very high quality small joinery furniture (Dolls house scale 1/12 fullsize) ?Any one else knows of use for pressure cookers (Not Food Cooking)? |

Hi fizzy - Why not go for the compleat weathered look - Spray with POWER WASHER with GRIT BLASTING ATTACHMENT (Cleans off any protective materials) - Leave to AIR DRY outside for about 2/3 weeks - The resulting finish will be realy WEATHERED
Have fun |
Thread: Work-holding / clamping for silver-soldering |
02/03/2013 13:28:56 |
Have you tried this tip to stop flux bonding to "block" use piece if C Iron (I use piece 3x2x0.25 inches) on the block under the pieces to be soldered. This plate is covered with "Tipex" (Typing corretion fluid) which stops the flux and solder from bonding to the iron. The iron gives a even heat to the work pieces and stops degrade to the hearth. Its been working for me on all my small soldering jobs (I learnt this from a silver smith quite a time ago) Also the S smith always used soft iron wire to hold pieces together - also tipex in the wire if required. |

Type this in Google "Sumitomo cermet insert" and you will get the manufacturers web site - full detailed downloads or all there products ( Sorry no prices ) - Shop arround the web for retailers and prices - I have one (Electric) that I purched at a show about 3 year ago for about £3 - its still going strong, but I only keep it for special work (No intermittent cutting) Hope you can find a supply in your area MikeB |
Thread: Poor quality finish |
18/02/2013 09:59:44 |
Main priority - correct shape tool for material - sharp cutting edge - tool set to the correct height. Chuck speed will vary depending on diam. of work so sugest start slow speed an then increase untill good cuts are produced - try using cutting oil (spray can type) Took me a long time to get it right
Happy swarf making |
Thread: Aldi Calipers... |
13/02/2013 19:03:18 |
Dont realy know about the Aldi calapers, but have a couple of the ones from Lidl which have srrmed to be fairly accurat - but they are only used for the initial sizing - the final sizing being done the oldfashion way with a micrometer (both inperial & metric) I know you are going to say that I'm old-fashon, but some of the old ways take a lot of beating. |
