Yes, even hardened steel can be turned.

These are commercial cylindrical dowels, 12 mm diameter. They are hardened trrough (not only case hardened).

Turning with Sumitomo cermet insert (with diamond honed edge).

600 RPM, d.o.c 0.25 mm, feed around 0.1 mm.

I wish every material I use would give that mirror-like surface!

Hi Hansrudolf,

from the pictures it looks like the dowels have been ground. I have tried turning hard stuff with TiN coated carbide inserts, but the result doesn't look as nice as yours.. How is the cermet inserts compared with ordinary coated carbide, and how much more do you have to pay?

Regards

Thor

Type this in Google "Sumitomo cermet insert" and you will get the manufacturers web site - full detailed downloads or all there products ( Sorry no prices ) - Shop arround the web for retailers and prices - I have one (Electric) that I purched at a show about 3 year ago for about £3 - its still going strong, but I only keep it for special work (No intermittent cutting)

Hope you can find a supply in your area
