P.s. Just finished changing BOTH front springs after one was found broken on Mondays MOT.

Edited By Nick Hughes on 16/09/2022 10:34:05

Interestingly, I had a Golf that had a broken rear spring, just before the 3 year warranty expired, dealership replaced only the broken spring, had it been out of warranty, they would have said BOTH springs would need to be replaced to keep things in balance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The oither cheaper alternative of course is to buy the coffee already ground........

But this was a simple technical question on an engineering forum

to anyone thinking of getting a hand grinder, don't! unless you have muscles like Tarzan.

It takes so long to get a fine grind, I have run out of desire for a coffee and want something stronger!!!!

They are a real pain in the a**e to use and need constant adjustment.

Go elextric unless you are a glutton for punishment.

It is not true that the likelihood of developing colon cancer decreases after 74. Please substantiate any claim to the contrary.

Whether or not it may be true that the majority of colon cancers in people with a genetic predisposition or a predisposing co-morbidity have manifested themselves before 74 isn't very relevant, because these represent only a small minority of colon cancers. However, the risk of developing colon cancer if you have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease increases steadily with the time you've had the disease - and therefore age. So, the idea that it becomes a lower probability with age in these circumstances is a myth. The reason for the upper age limit is for the reasons I have previously alluded to.

It's probably true that most colon cancers occur in the 58-74 age range, but that's not a probability statement. It's the number of cancers in the population. People, and thus their cancers, get fewer with age, so it's entirely what you should expect. Think how small the absolute number - not the proportion - of cancers is in the 100-year-plus population. Very few, because the population is so small (even if they were found all to have cancer). So, yes, in the population, the number of colon cancers will reduce with age. That tells you nothing about the probability of being afflicted, however.

no! you prove the opposite. There are plenty of statistics and records, it is just that most only look at the facts that suit their argument.

As has already been stated, you only need to ask and the testing kits will continue to be sent to you.

I do not see what the problem is!

I have one almost identical but under a different name.

That type of grinder will NOT produce a fine powder, despite what the advertising says, it is ok for coarse or medium grind but that type of blade grinder cannot produce a fine grind, for that you need the type that uses ceramic grinding wheels.

If, as you say, you are using a cafetiere then you do not need a fine grind, medium grind is ideal.

The pressure type of coffee machines (the ones used in cafe's etc) does need a fine grind, in order to extract as much coffee flavour out of the beans.

When using a cafetiere, the strength of the coffee beans is more important, I try for a high strength rating of 5 or more if used to produce cappachino or latte style coffee, anything below that strength and you don't get a full flavour coffee - all my opinion of course, others may differ.

The age range covered by the tests is because statistically, that is the age range where most bowel cancers are likely to occure. After 74 statistically, if you have not developed symptoms then you are 'unlikely' to.IF simptoms did develop, then your local GP would be able to refer for subsequent investigation and in most cases would be treatable.

For those who are over 74, you can request to continue receiving test kits.

As one who has had bowel cancer and been through more operations and procedures than you could shake a stick at, the continuation of testing could be a life saver.

Hi

Anyone had any dealings with Aliexpress based in China. They are offering many model steam engines for sale at silly prices. Examples , a three cylinder compound for 21.08 or a twin cylinder with boiler for 35.62, both post free from China. Not sure if these are kits or assembled but either way to good to be true.

Mike

this type of scam is common on Chinese sites - check the advertisement VERY carefully before commiting to buy.

The low price is designed to reel you in and desire to 'get a bargain' clouds your judgement.

If it is too good to be true............!!!!!!!!!

oh! do come on chaps, this debate is getting boring, neither side will agree, there is always evidence on both sides to support whatever argument you want.

No there is not evidence on both sides sufficient to support an argument. There is science on one side and ignorance on the other.

That's what one side always says, If you do not support the argument you MUST be ignorant.

It is what the remoaners say aboiut those who voted for Brexit - they are all ignorant.

It has always been the same - what ever I say is the truth, everyone else is ignorant.

I could go on but as I stated, it is getting boring, spats will develop, people will start getting angry, the mods will have to step in.

Experience tells us that there is no such thing as black and white, everything is a shade of grey.

If you think your argument is the right one i.e White, then you have yet to grow up and see the world for what it is.

oh! do come on chaps, this debate is getting boring, neither side will agree, there is always evidence on both sides to support whatever argument you want.

No matter what causes global warming, US or natural phenomenon, whatever WE in the UK do will have NO effect whatsoever.

I am a great believer that nature will do the sorting out of the problem.

Man has tried to tame nature throuout his existance, nature ALWAYS wins.

The global warming madness continues unabated when cows are being fined for farting - I kid you not!

Yet a few millions of years ago there were millions more dinosaurs were producing a damn site more methane than all the cows in 2022 ever could.

Try talking about global warning to China,India, Russia etc etc etc

They will all tell you to stuff it.

there you have it in a nutshell, now can we get back to sensible discussion?

In the 60s, Dad was a commercial traveler and he considered himself as a "professional" driver. At one time he did a course run by the Police about safety driving. One thing he was told that was heard by the instructor which may upset someone, "....there's NO such thing as an accident, they are all the fault of somebody"

cheers

Bill

A few years ago vehicle accidents were called RTA's by the emergency services, RTA meaning road traffic accidents.

That has changed and they are now callled RTC's, road trafic collisions.

I believe this was because insurance companies were saying that their clients were not liable for 'accidents'.

yes! Even at £50 it is very expensive for what you are getting, It's called a captive audiance I think.

Look around, compare prices, just because it is BT does not make it any more special than any other provider.

Having worked for BT for 33 years I was never impressed with there customer services and would choose NOT to use BT as a service provider.

Back in the good old days I signed up to Tiscali for internet services (dial up as it was then), they were taken over by TalkTalk many moons ago.

Yes! TalkTalk has had it's problems, poor customer service, data breaches etc but I decided to stuck with them when the then CEO said existing customers could have ANY new deal offered to new customers.

I have held them to it ever since, I have been paying less than £20 for fibre broadband for years, taking out a new 18month contract whenever a new deal came up, the only stipulation was that you had to have whatever deal you were on for 1 month minimum befor signing up to a new contract,

I have been on 65mb fibre broadband since it was available and paying less than £24, as soon as FTTP was available I signed up for it at 150mb for less than £30 with first 3 months free.

Their customer services has got better over the years and I have had no real service issues or problems.

The latest upgrade to FTTP @ 150mb came with a new EERO 6 router and is working really well, giving full wifi coverage over the whoile house. (I used the upgrade to FTTP to move the service access point from my entrance hallway to somewhere more central in the house).

There are lots of service providers that will offer you better deals than BT for a lot less money, it has always surprised me that people do not do their research to get the cheapest deals, service changeover for same to same is usually very quick, a change to FTTP may take a little longer but I was only without services for a very short time.

ANYONE paying over £40 should be looking at what deals are available through the comparison websites.

Thread: How Much is this Costing Me?
09/08/2022 09:52:51
Posted by blowlamp on 08/08/2022 16:40:28:

I'm not intending to have a go any individuals here, but the conversation within this thread goes to highlight one of the problems we humans have and that is that we can adapt to almost anything, even if it is to our common detriment.

I presume that most of us realise that there is no reasonable explanation with regard to the massive price hikes that have happend and are also scheduled to happen, yet this thread shows that not only are many accepting of it, but we are also chatting amongst ourselves as to how we are going to get along with it and somehow cope with whatever the consequences are.

Saving energy is always the best idea, but I'd like to know how, within the space of six or seven months, an average £1300-£1500 annual home energy bill has more than doubled, with some talk of an increase towards £4000+ by next year.

At this rate, charity, food banks, and soup kitchens are going to become the norm and I'm getting the feeling we're sleepwalking right into that scenario.

Martin.

with regard to power bills (and mortgages) WE have no say in the overall price determined by market rates, it is not a case of blindly accepting what is happening as we have no control.

I note you have not listed our OTHER options!

Charity, food banks, soup kitchens are the norm for a lot of people - where have you been?

the scenario is already here and it is not only in this country, look around you, open your eyes and get your head out of the sand.

I remember mortgage rates of 15% and having no say in the matter other than to lump it and pay up.

If you do not know why energy prices have risen, you need to get out more, the facts are there but you seem to just ignore them.

there are non so blind as those that do not want to see.

come on! we are waiting for your solution...........

As I have always got up early, I go into the workshop at 6 and use the machines on economy 7 until 8 it's surprising how much work can be achieved with 2 hrs uninterupted. The reason why I don't have a smart meter is that you have to pay by direct debit and the cost sometimes is more than I have in my current account by the end of the month. When I get the bill now I can transfer money to my current account as I do have other direct debits that need meeting too and a smart meter would catch me out.I think a lot of smart meter holders will be in for a shock.

Frank

my energy supplier lets me know well bofore it is due, that a DD payment will be taken, so your argument does not hold water.

If you are not paying by DD then you are paying more than you should, DD is the cheapest way to pay so you are shooting yourself in the foot.

as for smart meter users in for a shock! You obviously don't know how they work.

An interesting point about smart meters that has not been mentioned is that they take up to 15 minutes to update the readings, it is not instantanious.

As the price of energy has rockete, overall it showd I now regularly check my smart meter home display, overall it generally shows a steady day to day usage.

Background usage i.e overnight elec usage is about 10p per hour, gas about 2 to 3p per hour.

I could save elec by switching everything on standby off but I don't as it is more convenient to leave them on, this includes various clocks, TVs, computers, internet router and switch, central heating controller plus other on standby items.

While I would assume most on here will not be overly worried about energy costs, there are others in society that have a lot less income and will find rising prices will push them further into poverty.

There will come a point when the masses will say enough is enough and politicians will HAVE to do something.

I am a bit confused here. What’s the advantage? I touch my DRO consoles to change any setting by pressing the buttons. Why is touching a screen better? Will greasy fingers or gloved hands still work it?

Then there’s a tablet to ensure it’s charged, and will probably need turning on rather than automatically comming on with the machine

seems to be a lot of effort for not a great return. Please explain

it's cheaper, repurposes old items you may have lying around, works with cheap scales and does what it was intended to do.

if you are lucky/rich enough to already have or can afford a commercial setup, lucky you.

Others may not be so fortunate, or prefer to use a diy solution and derive great pleasure from building it themselves.

after all, isn't that what we do?

it's not always about how deep ones pockets are.

You cannot have it both ways, cheap anything and decent wages do not go hand in hand.

We all want better pay for ourselves but begrudge others (delivery drivers, fruit pickers and othervlow skilled work)

Society has to be fair for all.

I doubt if there are many on here that live (survive!) on the basic state pension.

I doubt if you have given a second thought to how they are to survive with rising fuel/food prices even with state benefits.

I think we should have a natioinal smile a lot day.

Thread: Rev. Counter

Posted by Lynne on 13/07/2022 16:44:18:

Hi All, Sometime ago now, I fitted a 4 digit rev.counter, so I could have some idea of the spindle speed when using the mill. It worked fine untill an unfortunate incident resulted in the Hall sensor bit being de-capitated. I have no wiring dia. of the kit I bought, but looking at the ones currently on ebay,it seemed I would need a NPN hall sensor, voltage range 6-40. I found one UK sourced. It's fitted and working, but I can't convince myself that the visual speed of the spindle is reflected in the rpm shown on the display. Was there some other factor that I should have been aware of? I've googled the couple of numbers that appear on the damaged sensor, but nothing comes up. So, electronics experts help me please. Regards Lynne

just replacing the Hall sensor would not alter the rev display unless you disturbed the magnets(if you have more than one).

if you have more than one magnet (4), then rotate the spindle by hand and you should get 4 flashes of the led situated in the Hall sensor mounting (per revolution.)

there is no need to go to all the elaborate procedures posted as a new rev counter (with Hall sensor) can be had for next to nothing from China.
