Agree with Jason. The die must be sharp. Some die holders can also be a little tight on the die. This does not allow you to open the die enough. Maybe you could make the bore smaller than called for to achieve the thread? Bri Edited By Boiler Bri on 29/04/2019 20:05:40 |
Thread: Which scale to build |
28/04/2019 19:50:43 |
Lee. I am not a skilled engineer so chose the Suffolk dredging tractor for my first build as it was more or less made from flat bright bar. My second has been the 4" Durham engine. This is nearing completion after a few years. The skill I learned on the first model helped with this one I have also started a sweetpea loco which again is simplistic.
These are my suggestions. On this forum there are varied skill levels and everyone is alway helpful - the occasional key board warrior puts his stupid comment in but there easily ignored. What ever you choose to build I hope you enjoy it. It's a fascinating hobby

I carried on putting items back on my traction engine after finishing most of the painting. Drilled the fire box skirt that protrudes below the foundation ring to attach the ash pan. Fitted a pipe between the mechanical oiler and oil check valve on the steam chest. Cut the steerage chains and attached them. I need to get better quality shackles as the ones I had are a bit cheap and the threads feel like they will strip is I tighten them too much
Every bit is a bit nearer to steaming.

I use rotabroaches. They quite cheap on fleabay. You have to have a 3/4" collet though. They cut very accurate holes.

I am with Jason on this. Its thats far away it could be anything. Thats if it still exists? Too many people are out to get into the history books these days and make a name for themselves. |

Moving on ---- I opted for buying laser transfer paper on line and printed my own water slide transfers. I am happy with the results and a coat of Humbrol clear varnish has done the trick. Not show standard but good enough.
I would post post a picture but for some reason my I pad will not load pictures anymore into my folders.

Ron they also had paid skilled chaps to do it, I am just a model engineer with limited painting skill, well except for emulsion and gloss which I slap on and the wife is happy 🤔😋 |

I use a hard one 😬 Soft one does not do it for me. My gums are so far receded which is just how it is. My teeth do not rattle 😂

I think these days wire strippers are very advanced and do the job so well. No need to poison yourself just get a good set of strippers.

5" Britannia
Does anyone have an automatic cylinder drain design for 5" loco's. Just watched a video on YouTube of the Sale area model engineers running day. A 9f looked to have auto drains. Mine are worked by a push pull rod from the cab and do not always work very well.

I use small 15mm x3 mm magnets with a 2kg hold to hold things like Allen keys chuck keys and spanners. Very usefull items.

The cold is a thought. With my engine nearing completion i have been using the miller in the cold which i rarely do sometimes never in the winter. So it may be ok as the weather improves.
I will wait and see as my flurry of use is over at the moment The oil is only light oil which is used in oil baths and drip feeder etc Millers which is good quality Bri
