Thread: Pros and cons of 1,2 or 3 superheater tubes?
10/01/2017 11:37:14

It is going to be interesting this one, there are two camps; one no superheaters, one as many as possible! I know Doug Hewson in his standard 4 uses 8 but this is 5" gauge. Personally I would use 3 stainless steel radiant type if there is room. Lets see what every body else thinks.

Thread: help with William needed
15/12/2016 10:50:00

Hi not being familiar with William but having a Robroy and assuming a similarity the pipe is to collect dryer steam from the top of the dome it can be made from brass or copper, do leave a clearance between the top of the dome and its open end approx 1/4inch some body on here did not and wondered why the loco would steam but only slowly!

Hope this what you needed to know.

Just a thought when Blackgates first designed Charlatan (5" 08 diesel shunter ) they used 4 smiths motors, still listed at £42.50 each but I do not know if they are he same, worth a phone call?

Thread: Locomotive track
06/12/2016 14:09:06

Hi Bill

If doing much running do not run on the flange edge it could wear grooves in the wheels, try to aim for 8mm thick or greater for a 5" loco, running on the out side corner of the angle is good but makes supporting it more difficult

Happy steaming

Hi Mike

For your use nearly any thing would do! For display, building or pushing up and down you could use hardwood, black mild steel is ideal a lot of clubs use this for there running lines. Are you not a member of Cambridge Model Engineers? If you are not why not join us and we could probably help you out from our pile of used. If really stuck I have some in the garden just in Suffolk.

Thread: If I had a hammer...
24/11/2016 08:08:28

Many years a go I replaced the rawhide and copper on a larger one (2 1/4inch), the old heads were removed by drilling and chiselling the recesses were debured the raw hide was encouraged in by tapping round the edge with a blunt chisel and squeezing in the vice. The copper was turned to a tight fit, the first time you really hit it hard it swells and locks in. I also hand carved a new handle from a ash log!

Hope this helps

I do not think LBSC intended the boiler to be lagged so to keep every thing in line our smoke box is lagged to.Thought you mite like this picture of father at the southern fed autumn rally at Chelmsford _mg_0939.jpgcmes sep13-03 001.jpg

Hello Bruno,

Our Marina built in the late 70s by my grandfather steams very well and goes faster than is safe, one week point is the overhung expansion link. The loco has never been used a lot but we have had to rebush this.

Good luck Paul

Thread: Any ideas how to undo these screws?
12/11/2016 17:55:52

Hi Ian

Interesting problem any chance the screws are Loctited? a trick I have herd of but not tried is to apply a red hot poker to the screw head and hope the heat breaks the joint. Dremel do make a right angle drive that screws on to the front of there machine or better Proxxen make a right angle mini drill but make sure you are sitting down when you ask the price! If you dare I some times fine a sharp tap with a centre punch at an angle beside the socket works.

Good luck Paul

Thread: What Did You Do Today (2016)
04/11/2016 08:55:30

Hi Neil,

The clutch normally only works on screwing try the drilling position, how about locking the chuck on to a short length of tube insert screw driver through tube on to screw and strap wrench round chuck? The first time I removed one of these chucks I did not know about the left handed screw and sheared it off I now have a 5mm left handed die for making new screws!

02/11/2016 12:40:29

Hi Neil

try looking at the 16mm people some of these do 7/8 scale as well, people do vary a lot in height any way. Rob bennet will sculpt to order a caricature of your self from a photo for a small fee! He all so does 1/8 scale (7 1/4 inch gauge) figures. I once took a white metal 16mm guard and sliced him up and soldered pieces of lead in the cuts to make him the correct height but he looked anorexic!

Good find Jason

Thread: GWR Class 1100 0-4-0 Dock Tank - any feedback?
12/10/2016 09:13:10

If you go to the Cambridge MES web site click on more information pictures there are several shots of a visiting midge but I know nothing about it. My grandfather built one in the late 80`s from the published drawings and 1935 M.E. articles I can not remember any problems. The one Martin mentions at our club will run all afternoon pulling two carriages with eight people on. The one grandfather built could be carried round the house by father and my self but we knew we had done it!

Thread: Leaf spring suspension
11/10/2016 12:35:49

No you will probably have to make every other leaf in some thing softer like Tufnol phosphor bronze or beryllium copper this will keep the strength down to a useable level and keep the number of leafs scale. You are being affected by the cube rule. Several of my wagons have two steel leafs and five Tufnol. One of the benefits of leaf springs is the friction between the leafs acts as a mild shock absorber so not such a bouncy ride as coils!

Thread: Model Engineers' Day 2016 at the Forncett Steam Museum
03/10/2016 14:52:48

I to enjoyed my first visit (I think father did to), very friendly and laid back show and museum. Got lost going had to ask friendly farmer for directions (could not find brown sign on main road!) then left memory card out of camera. Had a nice piece of cake, cup of tea and a chat with Andrew.

Thread: 3.5" rolling stock
22/09/2016 19:04:28

Hi Ben

Your not quite on your own if you look at my album it shows my train not all built by my self. I have one of peter woods kits not finished yet , If you want scale 8 spoke wheels Mark Wood does them or Clarksons jones goods bogie available from Blackgates (half the price). As already mentioned use scale drawings from the model press, scale dougs or visit your local preserved railway with camera tape measure and permission. Peter will rescale parts he as for me so will 17d I have one of there lowmacs to build in 3 1/2.

Happy waggon building
