237 forum posts 10 photos | Hi.i need help with the regulator on a william locomotive I am working on.i have the book by martin evans on the rob roy and william build, but sad to say in many areas its next to useless and this is one of the areas, under the boiler dome you can access the top of the regulator to fit the a pipe into the treaded hole you made in the regulator.however it does not say what this pipe is or give any details and the drawing to my mind is useless. Can anyone who knows about this boiler please help me out on this point please.thanks terry |

104 forum posts 17 photos | Hi not being familiar with William but having a Robroy and assuming a similarity the pipe is to collect dryer steam from the top of the dome it can be made from brass or copper, do leave a clearance between the top of the dome and its open end approx 1/4inch some body on here did not and wondered why the loco would steam but only slowly! Hope this what you needed to know. Paul |

![]() 2314 forum posts 139 photos | Hi Guys I have a part built William ( frames, cylinders, part motion and boiler ) but long put on "hold" I'm afraid. Moved into the wilds some years ago so D-I-Y and other "stuff" took over. I will be interested to see your progress. I liked the look of William when it first emerged and it did seem to be a more "usable" loco than Rob Roy. Norman |

237 forum posts 10 photos | thanks chaps. so let me get this correct in my mind. the fitting is an open tube treaded into the top of the regulator tube and cut to allow 1/4 inch space in dome. NJH. I have the chassis completed, most of the cab, tanks etc. will buy some parts pre laser cut to save time. invertor for the lathe packed up so waiting for new one to turn up to start build again. terry

605 forum posts | Hi Terry, sounds the same as my Emma Victoria I am building. The pipe is the steam pickup pipe, steam here is wet steam, on mine it then goes into the superheater and thence to the cylinders. I do not know if yours is a working engine or one in bits, if the latter note that the steam pickup pipe sits in a pressure retaining inner dome, the outer dome is the fancy bit you see and is just a cover. I assume most locos are very similar although I am not an expert, this is my first engine build. Good luck. Bill D. |

605 forum posts | Sorry Terry, from your later post I guess it is a complete build you are doing. Bill D. |
