Princess Marina

Good Evening Everyone

Is anyone else building (or recently completed) a Princess Marina? and like to share their trials, tribulations and progess?

I am 50% through building the rolling chassis, that is wheels and coupling rods but no cylinders and valve gear.

I am combining LBSC's design with Martin Evans piston valve cylinders. lt all seems to work on CAD!

Anyway it's a start.

Firstly i must point out I've never built or owned a Princess Marina but everyone I've ever come across, in something like fifty plus years have gone like the wind, never a problem. The old fella got that one almost right. Today I'd take a look at the boiler design, a bit dated in my view, plate thickness, staying etc; but generally great little fun engine.

Our Marina built in the late 70s by my grandfather steams very well and goes faster than is safe, one week point is the overhung expansion link. The loco has never been used a lot but we have had to rebush this.

Hi Bruno,

I overhauled and ran a lot a Princess Marina many years ago. An excellent loco. I dont think the change to piston valves is required but if you insist on this change you need to study carefully the Doris design and ideally work out on a computer valve gear simulator the changes required. The obvious change is in the combination link.

I do not think LBSC intended the boiler to be lagged so to keep every thing in line our smoke box is lagged to.Thought you mite like this picture of father at the southern fed autumn rally at Chelmsford

Gosh where have those three years gone,

Anyway here are some pictures of my oh so nearly finished Princess Marina. Right now the paint is hardening before varnishing. Boiler is fully certificated and trial run a couple of times with limited success. It helps to actually connect the LHS steam pipe!!

The valves are piston type from Martin Evan's Euson Design. And a Stanier tender for a Stanier loco not the old Midland ones in prototype which were too narrow and looked absurd.

Here is the split smokebox which greatly helped the pipework. Sealed well with golden loctite.

This is the backhead.

Here are the loco pipework connections.

Finally the pipework under the tender note the use of commercial banjos and motorcycle fuel filters although l have upgraded these to removable cartridge ones.

Really like what you have done with your loco. Just about to go down the same route as I have purchased a part built Princess Marina with part built boiler. All new but stood still for a very long time as the builder is no longer with us.

Model engineering is new to myself but machining is not so I think that I have got a bit of a chance. Your pictures and text have answered some of my questions however, these machines are works of art and I have a great deal to do.

I hope it all goes well but keep posting, nice to see the first run but a nervous day for you.
