ALDI are selling their multipurpose saw again starting Sunday 7 September.

This is a good piece of kit that will cut through up to 6 mm sheet steel with ease and leave a good edge. The saw is only £29.99 which is considerably cheaper than other metal cutting circular saws. Spare blades are also available at £4.99

I have reviewed the saw here:

No connection with ALDI other that as a satisfied customer.

Hi Mike,
I also found that the blade works well as a slitting saw. I used it mounted in my X3 mill to cut the slit when I was making your design of table for my bandsaw.

Hi Les,

I know that John "Bogstandard" has an Evolution Rage saw mounted for use as a slitting saw and that this worked very well. This blade is very similar to the ALDI blade.

I hope the bandsaw table works out well for you. It is surprising how many times the vertical mode is used when it is only a question of flipping the table into position. Prior to the flip down table I hardly ever used the vertical mode.

Hi Mike,

Some years ago I purchased an APTC115 bandsaw, which, because of space limitations remained in its packing case until recently, when I finally assembled it. The packing included the original receipt - dated 27/01/1997. Yes, that's right, its been languishing in its case for 17 years!

It works fine, but because it didn't come with the vertical table I need to make one. Is it possible to see your design?

Hi Gary,

Have a look on my website **LINK** and click on bandsaw modifications. Also on the yahoo 6 x 4 bandsaw group there are some drawing for the hinged table.

I hope this helps. If you have any problems then get back to me.

Hi Mike,
The table works very well and is much more convenient than the original table. The only modification I made was to add a magnetic catch to hold it in the position for using the bandsaw normally. I went a little OTT machining the radius on the edge of the plate.

Milling a radius on the edge of a 6mm plate

Note the tailstock supported the end of the plate while machining but was removed to take the picture.

Neat use of the drilled block for workholding, I like it!

Hi Engine Builder,
Here is another setup using a 1"-2"-3" block to machine the V groove in a jig for sharpening tangential tool bits.

Thanks Les for the pic, I had not considered using the blocks for lathework holding. I must put some on my Christmas list.

Thanks Mike, I'll certainly make one - I like the seat too.

I have had one of these saws for some time and would recommend using full protective gear when using because the shrapnel gets everywhere. Full face mask and gloves at least.

I think I have become an ALDI/LIDL addict. My reliable and ancient VAX lost a wheel, not a disaster but enough of an excuse so a few weeks ago, I bought a wet/dry vacuum cleaner from LIDL. This has all the fittings for the shop/car. I like the additional power socket for power tools and when used, flick the switch over and the vacuum responds to the power tool use. I used it on Wednesday on my thickness planer and when finished, the drum was full to overflow, enough for a half fill large plastic bag. From now on I think it will be used more in the workshop than the home.

Having acquired so much shavings/sawdust which has a limited recycling value, I saw that ALDI were selling one of those waste paper log makers and yesterday, I bought one. I thought that perhaps a mixture of wood shavings and shredded paper would make useful fuel for a wood burner. The next job will be to get a woodburner for the shed.

With winter coming on, I wonder if ALDI or LIDL will put a workshop stove on their specials.

My nearest Aldi is about 30 miles away so combined with a day out I called in and picked up a saw and a couple of spare blades.

I do a lot of aluminium casting and use alloy car wheels for the doner metal. Cutting them up is not easy. I have an Evolution saw which cuts through the thinner sections like a knife through butter but the teeth get clogged and when they are cleared can break off easily so it's quite expensive on blades.

I have tried the special thin aluminium cutting discs in an angle grinder but the discs wear quickly.

I thought I would give the Aldi saw I try. I was a little disappointed at first as after a couple of cuts the spring return on the blade guard came off exposing the blade. I found a replacement spring in workshop though and it's fine now.

I am very pleased with the saw's performance for my purpose. It is slower than the Evolution but I have just cut up a complete car wheel and all the teeth are still on the blade.

Not sure if blades are easy to get in the future,bu there is a connect email and phone number on the literature.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I now own one which will be used for chopping wood up for the wood burning stove and other jobs. I also bought some spare blades and noticed that they say wood , plastic and soft metals. I would take this to mean non ferrous. The blade look the same. Any thoughts?
Regards.
David.
