Hi I've got an odd error that I can't find reference to in the manual;:

"Material of the graphic(s) "Metals\Machined Steel" will be ignored in render, because it is overriden by materials of graphic faces. To make this material visible you could remove materials from faces."

In short, I combined a number of screw threads with the body of the spindle they are mounted on and now I can't get it's texture to be anything other than the default.

My other problem is that, although my wireframe model has nice sharp corners, the rendered version appears soft and rounded.

Thanks!

Hi Neil,

Re: rendering, I'm not familiar with TurboCAD but I know some 3D packages render in a hierarchical mode, i.e. so if you have a material that's higher up in a parts tree, that material takes precedence over a material in a sub tree, if that makes sense. Or maybe if you have touching surfaces there could be some contention.

Re: Sharp corners. Again some packages have a cornering function where a profile of the part is drawn along a plane and then rotated around an axis. To get sharp corners in the profile sketch you sometimes have to click more than once on the corner to get it sharp e.g. click once and you get a rounded corner, twice and you get a small radius, three times and you get a 90° sharp corner. Or your view window might be deceiving you if you are drawing with some kind of bounding box view. Like I say I'm not familiar with TurboCAD but just sharing some ideas.

Cheers,
Ed.

Oh, dear! I see you are working in imperial units. That's the first thing that gets changed when I'm getting set up....

... As appropriate to the job in hand

... Adept spindle upgrade, I presume.

I input the measurements in inches if necessary but use metric units as the default thereafter, as my measurement instruments including my brain and machine scales work in mm. Things like threads can be displayed on final drawings as TPI etc if necessary. The power of CAD....

It's another old chestnut but I struggle with fractions, particularly when you actually have to work with digital values (eg "3 thou under 7/32" - what's that work out at??). Metric avoids all that.

Neil,

What version of Tcad are you using? Are you using RedSDK?

Neil,

First; apologies for our haning taken your new thread off-topic so quickly !!

Now; back to the opening question ...

I have never used 3D TurboCad, but I suspect the problem is that although you have deliberately assigned a "material" to the "graphic" [i.e. what you have drawn], there is also a "material" assigned [whether by accident, or design, or default setting] to the generic set of "graphic faces" ...

The somewhat cryptic hint probably means that you need to find the setting for "material of graphic faces" and chnge it to either "none" or "transparent" ... thus allowing your choice of material for the drawn item to "shine through".

Sorry if that rambles a bit ... I need Coffee.

.

Edit: ... I've just found this ... now I deserve that Coffee !!

The answer (as with most things it seems) is to choose the right settings and redraw the part

I have much to learn, but each 'redraw' is getting better. Some things picked up already:

'Smooth' may get rid of facets when you create a curved surface, but it also rounds off the corners... so use more facets instead.

If joining 3D solids, make sure they overlap rather than butt up to avoid horrible 'disintegration' warnings.

To get 3D things exact sizes don't use a polyline and snap to the grid, assemble a 2D shape from boxes of the right size, then join them all together... THEN extrude your shape (and don't delete the polyline, put it somewhere safe so you can modify it without redrawing!)

Latest attempt below. Next thing to solve is why the spanner holes in the adjustment rings in front of the rear bearing aren't showing.

This will upset the purists, but with great relief I've found how to display fractional rulers!
