Whilst lubricating my S7 earlier today and came to do the awkward one in the side of the Vee pulley with my oil gun only just fitting on the nipple the oil goes everywhere have any members come up with a better idea ?

DC1's suggestion always works for me with these nipples: tear off a scrap of paper towel and put it between the nipple and the oil-gun.

Harry,

I have a slim 4BA box spanner so its easy to remove the nipple and squirt oil down the 'ole then replace the nipple!

Beats trying to get the oil gun square on to the nipple.

Phil that's what I'm now doing but still wondering if there's a more enlightened method out there ?

Hi Harry, I made an adapter to allow me to use a grease gun, but filled with oil, to get to that nipple. It is just an ally rod, drilled through and tapped at one end for a grease nipple, and chamfered at the other end to suit the existing oil nipple. I use the grease gun held 'upside down' to stop the oil escaping.

How about an extension tube screwed into the oil nipple hole, lead it to a more convenient place, either put the old nipple on the end of the tube, or a flip top oiler. Ian S C

Just put a piece of thin rag over the end of the oil gun, something the oil can get through and pump away.

Good thinking Ian just in from the work shop ! Bit of round brass 2BA thread on one end nipple on the other.

Harry,

The oil nipple you are referring to only requires to be oiled whilst the back gear is in use. When in "normal" use the pulley and the mandrel rotate as one.

I would not alter the original set up as Ian SC suggests as the pulley has been carefully balanced by Myford with the original nipple in place,

John Cordon's idea is best if rag of paper between the oil gun and the nipples trick fails for you.

Eric good thinking must admit I had not considered the pulley balance, so I shall use my extension nipple and remove it when finished lubricating the pulley.

Is the oil nipple in the actual pulley, and rotates, or is it in the bearing beside the pulley? If in the pulley, leave it as is, and forget the extension. Ian S C

Just a hint, a handy flip top oiler in some cases can be made from the flip top from a tooth paste tube.

I use a small oil gun and a piece of fuel line from a model aircraft, works a treat.

I was about to try the "scrap of kitchen paper" tip when a variation on the idea occurred to me. Although my Wanner oil gun has a sealing ring inside its nozzle, it leaks when applied to the screw-cum-nipples on the Super 7 gear train between spindle and gearbox. Rather than go into the kitchen, I looked out a suitable O ring and interposed this between nozzle and nipple with a very satisfactory resistant squelch telling me the oil was going where it was meant to. At the end of the exercise I parked the O ring on top of the nipple for the rear spindle bearing for use next time.

Like the OP I had trouble lubing the nipple in the pulley for the backgear but it helped to remove the nozzle and reduce its diameter slightly.

None of these ideas will work if oilways are blocked by congealed grease, of course. It might help if we stopped calling them "grease nipples"!

I know of someone who has fitted hydraulic nipples to his Myford, apparently with great satisfaction. I have to say, however, I have yet to find a sensibly-priced oil gun for hydraulic nipples that doesn't leak unacceptably.
