Has anyone here with a Tom senior milling machine used a spacer under the column to increase the distance between the table and tool ? I mean the horizontal type machines fitted with a knuckle vertical head , not the light verticals etc. This spacer is normally 3" or 4" in height. I have asked on the TS Yahoo group with differing answers, the main concern is that the bottom 3" or 4" inches of the knee are not engaged with the vertical dovetail on which it runs in the z-axis.

Any opinions ?

Ronan,

I know it doesn't help you but on my M1 the knee travels right down to the bottom of the vertical dovetail ( less 1.25 " when it hits the end stop).

It is fully engaged all the way.

Ronan,

I'm sorry but it looks like I misread your post.

I have not but it sounds feasible.

The knee is a substantial casting and should be plenty strong enough to drop another few inches.

Beware that you might not be able to raise the table so high.

The knee on mine regularly disengages with its screw if I'm not careful when lowering it.

Not much space with the vertical head and collet chuck installed.

Note to self: Search for those 2MT collets I know you've got, and make a decent drawbar!
