MYFORD - SWIVELING VERTICAL SLIDE

Hi all would again welcome some advise my lathe came with a Myford swiveling vertical slide but unlike the photo below

mine does not have a single bolt through the base, mine as a threaded tube which secures the bottom swivel then a 'tee' bolt which passes through the tube clamps the slide in place. Do I take it mine is wrong and the photo above is correct.

I have the old design as pictured by you, which appears to be all present and correct. Machining something sticking only a little way out of the machine vice and overhanging the side of the VS table, the whole lot is liable to move, requiring excessive clamping pressure. Myfords introduced a newer version with a pair of tee bolts side by side on both swivels to reduce amount of tightening but increase the grip and so prevent unintended movement. I also have one of these later types and can confirm their superior design. Dont plan to sell either at present even though I rarely have use for them as I have since obtained a mill with H + V capability. Nothing wrong as such with yours but only light cuts over say 2" radius from vert. screw. You could experiment with a slip of dry (not oily) paper under each joint.

Thanks for your reply, the point I was trying to make if that the holding down bolt on mine is not as the picture and I feel that in order to pass it through the tube which clamps the swivel makes it quite thin and flimy so I would rather replace it with the proper designed bolt ! So if some kind gent could draw up the bolt and email it to me

i just did the exact same thing when i acquired one without the bolt and bottom swivel, simply made them to fit

If you want any dimensions just send me a pm - fairly soon whilst I still have it in bits! ( At the moment it's on the hall table and I'm taking a bit of a chance that my ever loving will not complain for a while)

I did have a "Mk1"  vert. slide some years ago but sold that with a previous lathe - I suspect that the "T" bolt is similar ( certainly the T part will be) but the length might be different.. What length do you think yours requires?

Harry, pm me your email address and I can send you some photos I took this evening of the bolt off mine which will give you the dimensions. Trying to use this site to transfer them is making me lose the will to live.

Make one to fit and make it as chunky as possible

The original T on the t-nut is a bit mincy and you need as much stiffness as possible when milling on a lathe

It's also worth bolting an extra hard point against the side of the milling base, (bolted to the cross slide and pushing against the side of the milling slide), this helps to prevent any movement with the single bolt slides, they can swivel under pressure if there isn't any additional support

The second photo shows the two t-nuts of the "improved" version which helps to prevent this twisting weakness the single t-nut version suffers from
