Hi all, does anyone know anything about the boilers used on the Sufolk dredging tractor? I know that they are center fired and have a central vertical chimney but can't for the life of me work out how they work and how they tubed. I assume that they are tubed. Also what other boilers would be suitable for this application.I am considering scratch building something similar.

Regards Mark P.

John, this tractor was featured in ME vol 146 with plans and constructional details by John Haining. It is described in 3" scale I believe. I have vol 146 as a bound volume and as I also live in Lincolnshire it may suit you to borrow it to copy them. If so give me a ring, I have left a PM

It hardly has any tubes, just three that run across the top of the firebox of the water tube variety.

Haining's The "Countrymans Steam" Manual has sufficient drawings in it to make the boiler.

You could also use a vertical boiler rather than the horizontal of the Sufolk, there are a couple in teh MHS list and Harris's book is also worth looking at.

Hi All

I noticed your postings of 2 months ago on the Suffolk Dredging Tractor boiler. Do you have any John Haining (or other) drawings / description for the copper version of the boiler (rather than steel), or knowledge of a source for the copper version drawings / description..

Thanks

Allan

I made a Suffolk with the original boiler as described in the articles in me.
It was a good steamer and was easy to fire. [email protected]

As far as i know there is no copper version for this model.

The steel one is fine.

Have a look at Station road steam archive, there area  couple there with different styles of end plate fixing.
