Simat 101 tailstock

Hi I have recently acquired a Simat 101 lathe which came supplied with 2 x small tailstock centres both in poor condition. Initially I assumed they were 0MT. However upon reciept of a new 0MT centre, I realised that the ones supplied with the lathe are smaller still. The new 0MT centre only slides half way in to the tailstock center sleeve. Given that the centres suplied with the lathe appear to fit the tailstock sleeve, I can only surmise that the tailstock and the supplied centres are of a known standard other than Morse Taper. I also checked the dimensions of the centres against Brown and Sharpe taper sizes and drew a blank. I have considdered reaming out the tailstock sleeve to 0MT but this seems a little extreme and expensive.

Are there any other Simat 101 owners with sismilar woes or any person with a known solution or even suggestions as to how to proceed?

I know naught about simats, but how well does the mt0 fit, apart from the depth? I've read of 'half ' tapers, eg, mt1. 5, which is the same taper but shorter. If it seems firm, try some blue on it. If it really is a good fit, cut it down...

Hi There

Try it into the headstock.

I am sure the Simat is Morse 0 but it might need to be cut off at the small end to get it into the tailstock.

I have a Perris lathe which takes 0 morse tooling, but it is a shortened taper i.e. only the smaller end. Yours could be the same.

I have a Flexispeed lathe which is an earlier version of the Simat 101. It takes the "short 0 Morse" taper, that is the small end of the full taper.

Cutting down seems to be the answer, but perhaps Perris can still supply tooling of the right size as I believe their machine was based on the original Flexispeed / Simat 101 design.

A correction and apology.

The possible supplier of short 0 Morse taper tooling should have been Cowells and not Perris as I stated.

Sorry just another "senior moment" to add to my ever growing list!!

regards

Ian
