When I moved into this house, I found part of a combination square in a cupboard. Last week I finally bought a new one. At the weekend, I found the rusty ruler part of the old square in another cupboard. I cleaned up the ruler on a flap wheel, and oiled it. It fits one of the old parts I found. I will now use the old square for rough work, and the new one for more precise measurement. I think there is an old saying which covers this situation...

You will probably find the old one more accurate than the new one - I lost my favourite screwdriver for several years, bought a replacement, then found my old favourite - Don't use the new one now !!

A few years back, when I moved into a rented house I also found an engineers square - along with some toolmakers clamps, files, a micrometer, and best of all bench shears. Spoke to the landlord and he didn't want them so they left with me.

This house gave me a large piece of 4mm steel and some hefty aluminum plate.
