Hi, l have a Boxford CRB lathe, I have been oiling several places on a regular basis but a very slight noise has urged me to make sure l am oiling all the required bits.

I have the 'Know your Lathe' book which is vague. It mentions for example, a spindle pulley screw which l cannot find. Any clarity on this one?

Also it says the intermediate shaft pulley - oil daily through oiler at end of shaft external to cabinet??? Cant find it.

This is a lovely machine and l dont want to use it again until l find these and any other places l have been overlooking. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

You may find some information on your machine here however.

How to find a squeak on a beautiful bit of kit...nightmare.

I would get a mini can of wd40 or 3-in-1, 3 in 1 is probbly less destructive, more oily

scoosh a suspect bit

test run the unit

repeat until noise gone/located.

Thanks,

I nowthink that the oly part that l am neglecting is the sliding gear. Book says apply oil to groove in sliding gear....Cantfind groove.

Anyone out there got a bench model boxford?

Thanks
Tim

I think your benchtop machine if it has any kind of "rear drive" will be the same as my old model "A" and IIRC the spindle pulley screw is an allen key "plug" in the "V" of one of the pulley sheaves inside the headstock, squirting oil into this lubricates the pulley when back gear is engaged.

I normal operation the Pulley is locked to the spindle and both rotate at the same speed but when backgear is engaged they are running at different speeds hence the need for lubricant.

The groove in your sliding gear is the big channel the peg from the selector on the front of the headstock runs in again access from inside of the headstock.

Hi Paul and Tim,

You have to remove the grub screw, oil and the replace it. Fiddly but essential for longevity,

Here is the Boxford parts list for the Bench lathe headstock. part 771 is the back gear and 770 is the back gear sleeve, there should be a lubricating hole about halfway along this 'sleeve', there is a small cavity inside created by an oversize bore which acts as an oil reservoir. Just fill from an oiler.  Click on the image for an enlargement.

I have a full parts list diagram for all of these machines up to mk 2 bench and underdrive models. PM me if you would like a copy (pdf). Also there is a very good Boxford Users Group on Yahoo which is well worth joining. There are some very knowledgeable people there.

By the way, I agree with you about the quality of the machine, Mine was mostly destroyed in a fire last year but it is well on the road to recovery .

Best regards,

Terry

Brilliant! Thanks Terry. Yes l would love to receive the diagrams. I believe mine is a bench model - ie the motor is on the drip tray, not underneath.

Best Regards
Tim
