829 forum posts 1 photos	I have two, identical 4" 3-jaw Burnerd chucks. One that came with the ML7 that was dug, rotting, out of someone's garden shed (but cleaned up not half badly) had only outside jaws. The other I just picked up on slightly incomplete Myford dividing attachment. The chuck appears new although with some slight surface rust and has inside jaws only. So ... are the jaws matched to their specific chuck or can they be swapped between chucks?

829 forum posts 1 photos	Thanks for the responses guys. I just want to be able to use the outside jaws from the old chuck to replace the missing set on the new chuck. Like you suggest, I'll suck-it-and-see with a runout check.

7468 forum posts 230 photos	Does the chuck for the dividing attachment have a back plate that fits the lathe? If so, if worst comesyou might just have to swap chucks instead of changing the jaws. Other than that a bit of swapping around until you find the one that is most accurate. Ian S C

I can't see them listed however and, with the price I expect they are likely to be, it would probably be cheaper to buy a new chuck. I would be interested to know if anyone has any recent info. on buying replacement jaws. Regards Norman

829 forum posts 1 photos	Hi Norman, Yes, I looked but didn't see any, either at the UK or US sites. I don't think I'd go the replacement route anyway actually. When I got this lathe, the original chuck - with outside jaws - was one of the worst parts and it took me some time to free it up .... albeit, it appears to work OK when I did. Because it only had outside jaws, I obtained a no-name chuck or two and fitted Myford style backplates to them so I'm not really short of chucks. It's just that when this as-new and decent quality (Burnerd) chuck came up on the dividing attachment ... which fits the lathe also .... I thought it would be handy if the old jaws fitted. Then I'd use the old chuck body for that special tooling (that will come up one day real soon now) or perhaps revisit Harold Hall's article and try making a set of soft jaws for it.

25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles	Rotagrip are the most likely to have replacements. I recently bought a set of soft jaws from them and didn't think the price bad at all, though they were for a far eastern chuck. J

That would seem to suggest that their replacement jaws, at least, are interchangeable between bodies. One could perhaps then assume that original Burnerd jaws are likewise interchangeable. Encouraging.

40 forum posts	Sid, All chuck jaws are specific to every manufacturers chucks ie Rohm, SMW, Pratt Burnerd et all. For instance Rohm model No ***** needs jaws for that specific model, also replacement jaws are always ground in the chuck they are used in, to ensure the best TIR. Donald.

829 forum posts 1 photos	By "interchangeable between bodies" I meant bodies of the same make & model. That is: if you can buy replacement jaws by specifying only the make and model of the chuck, they are obviously not custom fitted to a particular chuck serial number. Ergo, they must be interchangeable between bodies (of the same make and model). Presumably the same would apply to the original jaws.
