I have just started refurbishing a small compressor. 500 W motor, 6 litre tank and .8MPa (about 110 psi in old money). What type of sealing compound if any, should I use on the various coupling threads ?

There's a reinforced gas grade of PTFE tape that's yellow, not white - that's almost certainly the one you should be using.

Hi Anthony, like Derek says, PTFE tape should be OK. You could also use Loctite 55 cord, which is PTFE but it is in cord form. Another Loctite produce you could use is 542 liquid, which has a temperature resistance of 150 *C.

Whatever you use, be sure you clean the threads thoroughly before applying any new sealant and reassembling.

Regards Nick.

Thankyou gentlemen for your advice. The compressor is up and running, although I did have to make an additional part for it, because the new pressure switch did not have holes for the safety valve and pressure gauge. You would not believe the difficulty I had obtaining 1/4" BSP taps locally. Spent several hours on the internet and phoning plumbers merchants, tool suppliers and hardware stores. On my way to a company I had finally found I called at a new place called "Tooltastic" (aka Buck and Hickman) on spec and was pleasantly surprised to find they had what I wanted (cheaper as well).
I have never heard of them before but they must be a big outfit judging by the range of stuff they stock. You may be interested in their huge range of cutting tools. Usual disclaimer.

Hi Anthony, Buck and Hickman have been on the go for around 180 years, and were the first major tool supplier in the country, their head office was once in Whitechapel Road, London. I have a couple of their old general catalogues, one from 1958 and one from 1964. In 1958 you could have got a carbon steel 1/4 BSP tap for 11 shillings and threpence, about 56p, or a ground thread HSS for 30 shillings and a penny, about £1:50, from them.

Regards Nick.

Buck and Hickman have such a large range of stock that some depots don't carry everything so most things have to be ordered and they are not the cheapest so shop around.
