I know this is a very old thread, but I now own the BB1 built by Colin Tyler. His collection came back to the UK and was sold by Station Road Steam. I am getting it recommissioned to run on steam again.

Cheers Neil. Did you know this was the actual engine used in the build featured in Model Engineer between 1966 and 1967? I am in touch with Colin Tyler's son Neil now, and we will be getting together once the BB1 is back from being recommissioned. It's had quite a life, having being on Blue Peter in 1969 (and featuring on one of the Blue Peter puzzles), and in the 1976 film 'At The Earth's Core'. I have put some photos in an album on here.

Reviving an old thread as my query is pertinent to a John Haining model.

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone could help me please. I have recently acquired a Suffolk steam tractor designed by John Haining and serialised in ME in the early eighties. The steel boiler appears to be good and has passed a corrosion and leak test but I cannot find any mention of the design working pressure on the drawings or in the articles that described the build. I have two books by John Haining about building boilers which mention the tractor and the earlier one gives the working pressure as 100psi but the boiler was redesigned for the ME articles and is larger with many changed details. The later one has the boiler drawing without the pressure notation.

This has become a stumbling block to getting the boiler certificated since the club tester would like to see a published design showing the design working pressure before testing.

I am informed that it is possible to calculate the working pressure from the drawings but that this is quite a task. To avoid this does anyone have a set of drawings for the engine, any other document or set of calculations that could validate the working pressure. I have test records going back to 2000 which show the test pressure was accepted as 100psi.

I will, of course, cover any costs incurred. I posted this query on Traction Talk and it was suggested that here might be better.

David, it would be worth trying to get a look at ME vol 146 No 3626 which detailed the boiler and possibly 3624 which introduced the model.

Or get hold of a set of drawings, Sarik do them

I have all looked at all of the articles mentioned and one in 147 but none show the designed boiler pressure. I have a set of drawings from Nexus, some sheets from the 3" and some from 2" plans but again no design pressure for the boiler. I believe that these are the same plans sold by Sarik as TE18. A 2" sheet shows a 120 psi pressure gauge, possibly indicating 80 psi design pressure for that size.

I've just noticed this.

Did the Blue Peter feature show it being used to 'plough' a field with a balance plough? If so, I think I recall seeing it - I would only have been about 7 at the time!

Just a well they did not try to recreate photo No1 with Blue Peters track record!

I've looked through all the Suffolk tractor article and can see no mention of boiler working pressure or even of a safety valve which might have included such information.
